Looks interesting. I'll have to dust off my bible and have a look at some of those. Maybe I'll start with psalm 37 :)

No - what you're hearing is the tone you get when your line has been disconnected. :P

Leave a message. They might call you back when you least expect it.

I picked up a Bible a while back with a quick reference like that at the front for various problem times, and for various good times. It's very handy.

I've looked at a couple. This is going to sound stupid but are they all generally about gaining strength through God? (read: can't be bothered to read the all). Or are some about personal fortitude/courage? If you removed the God part of Psalm 37, it's still a fairly uplifting and spirited set of verses.

Has anyone ever 'secularised' the Bible?

The Bible is part of everyday secular language in many cases doctoremma - sometimes people may not realise that phrases of common sense or wisdom or condolence fortitude strength etc. have their roots in Scripture

There's a whole lot of common sense involved for those with belief in God, more than one might expect at first glance that has permeated humanity...

.....as he does of course ;)

pml, I don't know if a Bible without God would quite hit the bestseller list the same way though - Scripture is copied, modified into fiction, inserted into law, into poetry, art etc. etc. but there's only one original. imo :)

Maybe God tried calling you and got a busy tone?

Along with a host of other religions and values too;). I suppose the Greek world would be the only one to rival the Bible in influence.

Thomas Jefferson had a go at a non-supernatural bible. About as close to a secular version as I can think of.

    Jefferson in certain respects.

In more recent times A.C. Grayling released "The Good Book". It was very odd that in creating an atheistic book of wisdom he had to mimic religious texts.

Mimicking the style of religious texts done him no favours with the critics. He would have been far more successful with a normal style with maybe a fop to the publishers of just making the title "A Humanist Bible". Shame really.
