how to use strange boiler timer switch?

Hi all, I just moved house and the oil fired central heating has a timer switch in the sitting room that i'm unfamiliar with, i'm used to the ones with a white dial that you push or pull the hours you want the heat on and have the option of off on or timer and a red LED when the heat is on.

This new house (which is probly quite old) has a timer that is on a copper colored plate with a black dial on the left and two black switches on the right. The dial has the hours of the day and has four tabs, two white and two red, numbered 1,2,3,4. The black switch next to the dial says 24 hr, 1x 2x and off. The switch all the way to the right just says press down and slide to the left. If I turn the switch to 1x, the boiler switches on, but I dunno if it will stay on, I only ran it for about twenty minutes to see if the rads would heat up and they did. If I turn the dial around the switch on the far right will sometimes switch on its own from left to right.

This switch says Landis or Londis on it, is anyone familiar with it and can tell me how to use it? The estate agents know eff all, they are useless.

    Landis and Gyr.

On 1x it comes on and stays on till the second off tab 4, 2x comes on at 1 off at 2 on at 3 and off at 4, 24hr!! and off.

There also used to be a small slide on the on/off indicator that you could slide over to advance, ie, if in off possition it would come on and stay on till next off, and visa versa.

thanks very helpful, great to know how this thing works. still can't decide if it's a clever design or unneccessarily complicated :)
i suppose since i just want to knock it on/off manually when i want the heat i can just switch between 24 hour and off
