More Distance

Currently I am using nike irons that are about 7 years old. I use decent balls, usually Pro V1s.
    I can hit a 5 iron around 150yrds consistently.
I am looking to get more distance out of my irons. Would I be better to go to the gym and do weights or go to the driving range for a few hours a week?
    I'm 6ft and have a slim build

Weights aren't the problem or the answer. Get lessons. Make your swing more efficient. Better ball striking almost always increases distance.

Agreed weights arent gonna help as such, but obviously doing some leg and core work wouldnt hurt. Friend of mine is a pro, hes 22 6ft1 and only about 10 stone! Hits it long, so wouldnt worry about your stature ;)

Agree with the two posts above, but if you really want to work out then stretching will help you more than weights. But lessons will help more than anything.

Unfortunately I have to agree with the above - I lift weights religiously every week and my distances are shocking

Stretching has put 30 yards onto my game from last year and have not lifted a single weight in that time.

I have videos from July last year and now and the difference in my shoulder turn and how straighter I am able to keep my left arm is very noticeable..

Weight lifting is not needed to play golf well.

Agree with the above, technique should make a big difference. Working on hitting Draws at the moment and have had a couple of lessons. Was previously hitting high fades and already can see a difference in distance.

The pro I was with out in the K-Klub also suggested yoga/pilates to me as a way of increasing distance by building core strength and flexibility. Have picked up a deal for 6 pilates sessions, haven't gotten round to getting to any classes yet, so can't say if they'll have much of a difference personally yet

simply answer is to use a harder ball!

Very little distance difference between hard balls and soft balls these days.
Going to a Pinnacle wont get the OP hitting a 5 iron 180+ yards.

You give a good golfer a Pro v1 and a Pinnacle and he will hit them within a couple of yards of each other.
Only benefit I get from hard balls is when I am putting unwanted spin on them off the tee, then I switch to the hard balls.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I was looking into yoga/pilates for cycling so i'm gonna give them a go along with having a few lessons

Hope this comes out ok a couple of tests for flexiability.

You should get the clubs checked as well at your lesson, you may have old shafts or incorrect shafts for your swing. That could make a big difference as well.

Ya, I can do all them no bother.

And I'll ask the instructor what he makes of the clubs.
    Thanks again

Getting your weight efficiently transferred through the ball will add distance. I used fall off my swing by getting weight on the back foot and leaving it there. I was hitting a 21 degree rescue 150m, as soon as I staarted to get a balanced swing and transfer the weight back through I saw a huge distance gain. 7 iron is my 150m club now.

Just to clarify, I wasn't suggesting that it was.

I lift weights and play golf, not because I play golf :)

The clubs are not the problem, if you gave tiger woods your 5 Iron he would hit it over 200yrds.
Its your swing. try one lesson and see what the pro sayes

Reply was in response to OP question regarding lifting weights

If you learn a bit more about the golf swing it will be easier to understand how to get more distance. Just start with Google and work on your own swing at the range for a while.

Begin with your grip; Are you gripping it correctly and always the same?
Your address position including ball position.
    Then your swing itself;

Sorry initially i didn't specify my golfing experience, i'm now 23, from the age of 11-15 I was a junior member at a local club and had lessons throughout those summers. I didn't hit a ball again til I was 21 and over the last two years I have got back into the swing of things.
I am now hitting fairly consistently and am fairly confident of my grip, ball position but am just looking for more distance. I have booked lessons with a local pro to see what he says about my swing and how I can improve it.
    Thanks everyone for the replies
