Hi, a mate of mine and his wife are coming back to live here after many years in the U.K. What is the situation about bringing a U.K. car (or two) and re-registering here? I think you can import for free, but must you have owned the car for a set time abroad beforehand? Also I suppose '08 cars and younger will avail of the CO2 based tax? Can both husband and wife bring their own car? (She is from the U.K.). Anything else I can tell them? Thanks.

Yes once genuine and having had the car for 1 year I think (might be 6 months), they can register their cars vrt free. There is a period that the cars have to be kept this side aswell.
I hope they bring something worthwhile back so that they save a few quid.

We brought two cars back to Ireland with us a few years back. Not sure if criteria has changed but in order to waive vrt, we had to own cars for 6 months or more.
The tax office also wanted to see bank statements, royal mail redirection paperwork, invoice from removal company and receipt for ferry bookings and proof of residency in ireland ( job offer/ tenancy agreement/ house deeds etc) none of the above were a problem as your friends should have some or all of the above if moving over and the whole process is pretty much hassle free. One of the cars was just under a year old so the lady came out to car park to inspect it but the other was 3 years and they didn't need to view it.

The new log books were issued with a printed message on the front which said if either car was sold within 6 or 12 months ( can't remember exact duration) then vrt would then be charged.
