hi folks. just wondering if this is a known issue.

When my dad parks his car near the local garda station, and locks it, upon his return the fob wont unlock the doors. He has to use the key to unlock the door. He reckons that there is something in the garda station that is interfering with the central locking. The fob works at all other times.

I have told him to not park the car near the station, but in the meantime, and without giving away any state secrets, is there something in this?

Not so much the Garda Station, but I wonder about the associated radio mast which will carry commercial mobile phone antennae, etc.

Could be interference from the TETRA system, although I'm using it everyday, park my car in the station and it works everytime. None of our state cars have problems either.

What make of car is it?

Sounds like a case of EMI mixed with needing a new battery for the key fob.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_interference

Them masts on the Garda stations give off a far wack of power in terms of watts, first I have heard of any interference, the installation jobs are usually very good and the transmissions are very clean and filtered well due to the urban areas.

thanks for all that folks .......

I am not sure what car he drives. Its a Toyota something ... .it was new 4 or 5 years ago. I am going up to visit this weekend, so I will check the battery in the fob .

I am sure all the stations are insulated against EMI etc, but its possible that this has worn away over time. If thats the case, then surely the guards themselves have noticed with their cars, or reports from others. I will ask @ the station too.

I never thought of TETRA .... i assumed it was something to do with the masts on the station roof.

    thanks again ....

Well just goes to prove, the car is grand and secure parked by a Garda station.

I had a Opel with a car cradle. I used to leave a mobile in the car. When I went into petrol stations etc.

If I ever returned and the phone was ringing inside the car I could not open the car with the Key Fob when the phone stopped ringing I could open the car again.

I reckon the Mobile mast is the answer.

I used to have a two way radio in my taxi ages ago that would activate certain pedestrian crossing traffic lights when you keyed the transmission button. I suppose some level of interference with different signals isn't all that uncommon.

Is it like the taxis in Galway who can use the gadget on the dash to change the traffic lights?

Signal crosstalk, pretty common due to the limit of radio frequencies available and the fact of so many different devices communicating with each other these days. Not going to go away any time soon.

My mom was telling me back in the 1970's her TV was able to pick up Garda radio traffic on one of the channels.

Technically it is known as RFI- Radio Frequency Interference. Just google it and you will see what its all about.
