Quick question, father in law told me that rooks are protected. i thought crows in general were classed as vermin or is it if they are near livestock / crops they can be culled? would be interested to know for future reference.

They can be legally shot and trapped over crops/livestock according to the derogations for each province

But fundamentally, yes, they are protected.

Oddly enough, I have heard something similar to this as well - but it was years ago.

Is there any legislation specific to the Rook as opposed to Corvids as a whole?

ALL birds are protected under the wildlife act and quarterly derogations are given to cull certain species.

Not really - its all covered in the derogation below regarding how and when certain vermin bird species can be controlled. Just scroll down a bit

    http://www.npws.ie/media/npws/publications/legaldocs/Declaration%20for%20Leinster%20Sept%202011.pdf

PS: These derogations are issued for each province, the above is for Leinster but they are all identical as illustrated on the NPWS website.

I also thought they were protected as they are not an attacker of livestock or cereal/vegetable crops. In fact they live alongside humans clearing up our mess.

I know this isnt what you meant but there is no catagory as vermin in Ireland.

Interesting. So according to that greys and magpies can only be trapped shot until the end of April?

Yes but another derogation will be signed and extend the date.

No - they are rolled over every 6 months, so a new one covering the period up to November 2012 will be signed off on within the next few weeks.

They can cause problems in newly sown crops, feedlots and by pecking at the plastic wrap when baled silage is being made or stored.
