MW3 online - Which provider?

Right, seeing as i cannot get UPC Fibre Power (stupid phase 2 housing!), i'm currently on WiMax. But, it's just not uctting it anymore, and i'm changing soon as i always only get 3 of 4 Ping bars when playing online (360).

So, i'm wondering of those who have Eircom or Vodafone and not NGB, is the latency any better or should i just put up with what i have?

I had Eircom and then switched to Eircom NGB and then to UPC.
With eircom I generally only got a three bar irrespective of whether it was NGB or not. Now with UPC it's nearly always 4 bar

Eircom was good enough for me in MW3 imo. Definately playing better with UPC but my kdr is kept in check by my constant alcohol abuse. :(

Ah fair enough, i was going to change if people were getting 4 bars sometimes, but if it's 3 there's no point going through all the hassle.

I had UPC in the last 4 places i rented, then i bought a house in an estate and was told i could get UPC, only to find out when attempting to get it that my house is a phase 2 and i cna't get it (i'm 46, and it can be got up to 40). I don't mind the kdr, but i just cannot compete in the likes of Gun Game, and the extremely obvious 1/2 second delay is making me rage in hardcore games.

On the mobile so cannot post the link but digiweb have an offer on at the moment. Think its called metro express, up to 30Mbps for 30 bucks I think and doesnt require a landline ;)

    Hi

Just be aware that any of those providers will not guarantee the latency, so if you switch and end up with a cr*p connection you will be stuck! They only guarantee the upload/download speed(and only to some extent). Usually advertising is "up to" xxmb. It depends on the line (Fibre/DSL) and how far/close you are to the exchange.

Plenty of other things can affect latency, including the router, using wireless, the wiring in the house(DSL) and so on. You should head over to spedtests.net/ping and post back what you actual ping is.

Also bear in mind MW3 is using lag compensation to actively add a delay to anyone with a low ping (severity of this depends on the lobby you are in). So again if you get a good ping you could see even worse results! Despite all the rubbish on YouTube claiming a fix, there is nothing you can do as the software is on the host, hence any local changes (opening ports and so on) will not affect the algorithm behind the lag comp software!

Host without active delays (like cod/mw2) is the only way to go. There was really no complaints about any lag in those games and for good reasons. Hopefully Blops2 will employ this type of net code and finish this current obsession with delaying low pings! And on another note host is not the massive advantage people claim it is, which is why(i assume) they began active delaying!

Post up the results from speedtests.net/ping and we can see if we can figure out whats going on!

Has anyone tried this? Thinking of getting it, bit worried about 100gb allowance though.

Nah the speeds too slow, only 8mb as opposed to the 30mb in that digiweb offer.

i'm on 2.5 mbs speed, fastest my line will allow, ping is around the thirty mark, works well for gaming no lag at all

I'm definitely not going to go with another wireless/satellite crowd, which really only leaves me Eircom.

Here's my current pingtest (on a good day!):

    And a speedtest:

It's gone really bad in the last few weeks, just seems to be slower. And i don't quite get the Lag Compensation, i thought that was only if you got host? From what smoking_kills said, it sounds like they penalise you for having lag?!

I am currently with Eircom NGB 8MB down, and I get full bars all the time. And it's using wireless to connect to the router from the Xbox and PC

Thats poor alright, anything below 50ms is preferable, but realistically below 30ms is where you want to be! get away from satellite/wireless. you just cannot beat a hard line

No they don't penalize you for having lag, the system is supposed to help people who have lag. But there's more to it than that. Ping is simply response time between 2 systems (pc's xbox's whatever). however, jitter, packet loss and general quality of the connection all play a part. hence the lag compensation in MW3 is just rubbish, there are simply too many variable outside their control to warrant the system in the first place.

Eircom promise less contention on their line, also look at UTV, they do the same. But as i stated before. There are no guarantees when it comes to latency!

    Good luck!

Nearly anything would be better than what i'm currently getting. Eircoms NGB, is that still the old lines, or is it only in certain areas with upgraded lines?
