I have used standard bread yeast for ginger beer, but a champagne or stand beer yeast will work too

You could try and make your own starter like for a ginger beer (expose a ginger/sugar mix to the environment for a week or so, to pick up wild yeasts and lacto bacillus).

That said even bread yeast will do to get you started. No sense in using expensive yeasts when you just want to get the basics down. Yeast selection is not a primary factor in brewing quality when you are only learning the ropes per se.

If you are making the root beer with spray malt rather than plain sugar (I do recommend this) you will need to source it from a home brew store. If you are doing that, buy some regular beer yeast as well.
