Redundancy - take a break?

Has anyone just taken some time out after being made redundant and had it work out ok for them? I'd like to take some time off to get my head together, decide what direction I want to take and just relax for a little while after working in the same place the last 11 years?

I haven't been affected by redundancy myself so can't really answer your question specifically from that angle.

But I did have some health problems a few years ago, that resulted in an absence from work for about 3 months. It gave me some time and space to think about what I wanted to focus on for the future from a work/life perspective. It also gave me some extra time to spend with my young daughter, although this was difficult because of my health issues.

I don't see any problem with what you're suggesting. Think about what you want to get from work and life in the future and focus your attention on getting it rather than charging headlong into getting the next job.

    Best of luck OP.

I work in IT atm - just not sure if I want to stay in it or what area I'd prefer to be in tbh.

Was made redundant in 2009 with a decent pay off so able to live to same standard if needed for 12 months - took me 7 months to get a new job but the enforced time off work did me good, didn't realise it but needed a break after working flat out for many years (when doing it I hadn't realised the effect of 10 hour days and numerous weekends! - just kind of get on with it).

1st thing I did was go on holiday then took a couple of exams etc.

I was in a very fortunate situation but, ff you can afford to, take a break, even if its just 3 months.

Agree with ya thebiglad, it's only when you leave that situation you actually wonder how the hell you did it. However I'm two years out of work now and although I was twenty years in a pretty senior position I'm finding it very hard now to even get an interview. You were lucky bud,to get back within the seven months.

My partner did what your suggesting. He, and I, didnt panic aboout him getting a job for a year. Near the end of a year he applied for the type of job and workplace he had decided he'd like to work best over the course of that yr and he got the job ! It was only the third job he applied for ! He loves where he works now, and loved his yr off...
Hardest thing was other people not understanding this concept of being happy not to be working. He kept him self busy every day, doing jobs that needed doing, keeping fit etc.....boredom was never an issue..

    best of luck with it

If it's an IT area in demand (for the foreseeable future) I would take the redundancy and travel the world. :)

I did not get redundancy but between my mums will, shares from a previous job and my house being rented out and myself making a nice surplus thru this I left AIB in March as I could not hack it anymore working for idiotic management any more. I have decided to take time out and set up my own catering business. If you can take time out then. I feel much less stressed for it and when I do stress at least it will be my own and not at my manager making me stressed!

Totally agree btw. However I don't care what people think now. As long as I am happy with the decision and keep myself busy then no one shud care
