M8 Roadworks & M7 Radar Fixture

Can anyone tell me why the M8 has been reduced to a short section of single carriageway, in both directions between Mitchellstown and Cahir, just north of Skeeheenarinky? The signs say roadworks, but I've seen no movement there for the past 6 months?

Secondly, there is a new radar equipped structure just east of PortLaoise on the M7, can anyone advise what it's purpose is??

Is that what that is. I have been wondering every time I pass that, as to what the hell that contraption is.
In case anybody's interested (or knows more about it), it what looks like a large solar panel on the upright of the gantry sign at J16 facing the same way as the traffic flow - ie. facing north on the NB carriage and south on the SB carriage.

there are some form of matrix displays installed on gantry supports along that stretch. Have seen one lit with a no entry style sign on it. It may be that you've seen?

This what you are talking about guys?

    ghost-driver-led-vms.jpg

They are ghost driver signs and detect vehicles travelling in the wrong direction as there have been a number of incidents over the years whereby motorists have mistakenly travelled down slipways onto live motorways facing the wrong direction

That's the ones. Thought they might be for that but wasn't sure

Think I posted a thread on them, but can't remember.

I presume they are not always illuminated - how did you trigger them cherrytaz?!

No they are not always illuminated, only activated by vehicles driving in the wrong direction.

I grabbed the image from link below:

Don't worry I didn't "test" if they are working!

I really have no idea but it gets on my nerves. Surely they should have done whatever it is they need to do (nothing by the looks of it) by now.

    according to AA roadwatch :
The M8 Dublin/Cork Rd is down to one lane both ways between J10 Cahir South and J12 Mitchelstown North until further notice
This is due to an unsafe road surface and a 60kph speed limit applies along the stretch

That's absolutely ridiculous on a new road. The design of that whole motorway is terrible, any bit of rain and there's always standing water.

There were actually some people working on that stretch of M8 today - first time I've seen any activity in months.
