I recently bought a 2008 Honda Civic but it only came with one key. I want to get a second one. Do I have to go back to a honda dealer? I assume I can't just get one cut like you can a front door key with the immobiliser etc. Any advice would be much appreciated. A local garage told me 2nd keys can cost up to 500, would like to avoid that if possible!

the problem isn't actually buying the key, you can get them from the dealer for under €100, the costs go up because the key has to be "coded" by a dealer so that it will work with your car. I could be wrong on this but i think only a main dealer can code a key
I was charged €300 a year ago for key plus coding.

Bring proof of ownership with you. They won't cut the key and code it for your car unless you can prove that you are the legal owner of it. At least that is what I was told by the Ford dealer that I am going to to get a spare key for my car. I imagine most dealers are the same. My dealer is gonna cut a key for me, just a regular key that will open and lock the doors manually for just 20 quid. If I want the immobiliser key with my cars deets codes into it, that will be 250e. I'm fine with just getting a regular key as a spare.

With an immobiliser, doesn't it mean that the car won't start with a non coded key.
Is it the central locking your referring too?
You'd better check that your car doesn't have an immobiliser before getting one cut as a non coded key won't start the car but it will unlock it. Its fine if you lock your proper keys in the car but not much good if you lose your proper keys.

    You are wrong about that.
There's plenty of place who code car keys for way cheaper than main dealer.

I was looking for extra key for my 04 Mazda 6 as I got only one.
Main dealer in Castlebar quoted about 140 euro.
Locksmith in castlebar town centre quoted 90 euro.
I eventually got it done in Poland for 40 euro.

auto key, naas road (just off m50). very good guys, very quick and dealer quoted me €250 ford 06 focus flip key they did it for €160, no issues and it had to be coded and everything

Luckily these guys had the computer software for each of the car types in question which allowed them to code the key.

I'm not sure if a special software or just the regular diagnostic equipment will do to code a key, if it is the regular one then you should be able to find someone like the above mentioned to code the key easily enough.

I work for a Honda Dealer;Genuine Honda Key is approx €120 + €40 (half hour labour) for coding, key can be ordered over the phone using Credit Card, proof of ownership can be produced when you call to get key coded to car.

    Hi CiniO,
Just spent the last week looking for the only key of my car. Eventually turned up today. Needless to say, I have learnt my lesson. Would you mind giving me a contact email address or phone number for where you got your key in Poland?

Heh to answer your question here's the details:
    Dorabianie kluczy Zenit
    ul Sloneczna 29
    33-100 Tarnow
    tel. +48 667-669-882

But that's just a local locksmith. I doubt that would be any use for you, without actually being there. I also doubt that owner speaks English.

A local locksmith to cut and code car keys?
Did I miss something or your car does not have immobiliser?

    It has immobiliser. It's a mazda 6.

Nowadays nearly every locksmith has car keys coding device.
I mentioned before I was offered this service from local locksmith in Castlebar for 90 quid, while main dealer asked 140.
The funniest thing was that guy in main dealer said it's going to take about an hour so I would have to sit down and have a coffee, because they don't have a key cutting machine so they need to run to local locksmith to cut it, and only after that they code it.
What's the point then in using main dealer, if locksmith offers the same service cheaper.
I eventually left it anyway, as I knew I will be able to do even cheaper in Poland, and I was going there soon anyway.

I got a replacement key for my Car in Timpsons, cost about €50 and they had it done in 20mins, there's a few around Ireland.

They can only do fairly basic keys though, mine was for a 2008 Astra with no alarm.
