galaxy mini vs y

tried searching but cannot find somthing difinitive so i thought i would post,

basically at the moment using a vodafone smart, its incredibly bad.

been thinking about getting a new phone and tonight had a quick go of a mini and it felt miles ahead of the smart(which is grand enough for everything bar texting and the odd web browse and its slow out)

so ive been looking at the mini and the y and i cannot decide which is better

the mini seems to win in most areas(bigger screen, nicer camera more ram etc)

the y has a faster processor though. also 40 quid more.

so the question is, 830MHz cpu with 290MB ram going to be faster than the mini with a 600mhz cpu with 384mb ram and adreno 200 gpu. i dont see a gpu listed atall for the y,

in all respects i think id prefer the mini bar cpu but will it be noticable or much the same since the mini is ahead in other areas? also for 40 quid less i actually seem to get more for my money?

I'd go for the one with the faster chip, personally.. I also think the Y is a nicer looking and feeling phone.. Call a spade a spade, the mini, whilst good value, is a phone with just about the slowest chip(he chip in question dates from 2010) in any android phone from a reputable manufacturer(I wouldnt consider vodafone to be a reputable manufacturer, in the case of your smart :), and before anyone mentions it, I know its made by Huawei) on sale at this point in time. I can see it getting very slow indeed after a few months of use

Have you considered getting a Galaxy Ace from adverts.ie or something, best of both worlds there, bigger screen, faster chip and better camera.. They can't be making much more than €100 i imagine..

actually i have, just head a quick look at it seems the ace is getting upto 150 still, could nearly get an original s for that much.

I have the mini since last August. Its an ok phone but as mentioned above it is slow. Apps can take some time to open. There's also an issue with wifi on them(didn't know about it when I purchased). Every so often it doesn't work & just says error. The only way to get it going again is to reboot. It seems its a very common problem with the mini. All in all I'm happy with the phone as it is my first smartphone but if I was do it all over again I would spend a bit more & get something like the galaxy ace. Actually the Ace 2 is due shortly so it might be worth a look.

€150 Jeez, let that go, they're only about €190 new and sim free. As you say, an original Galaxy S would be a better buy for the money, stick an Ice Cream Sandwich ROM on it and you'd have a far better phone than anything mentioned here..

Yeah, theres the Ace 2 and the Ace Plus after showing up. they're yet to ship though so their sim free price on amazon are £230 and £300(that would come to nearly 400€ which would be ludicrous for what i still a mid ranging handset) respectively which is far too much for them and a far cry from the the price of the Galaxy Mini that the OP is considering

The galaxy is easy to flash all you need to download is odin. Go over to xda or the androidforums.com and there will be rooting guides which is what you'll need to do if you want rid of the apps and stuff. If you want stock roms for the galaxy go to sammobile.com which has loads of firmwares.

Bit late for the OP no isnt it! :)

But yeah they are a great option for a cheap phone that looks nice, and is really well specc'ed for the money. Getting official ICS too, not bad for €115 unlocked. Could prob find a unlock code for free online as well
