Front Mech Setup

My front mech went a bit off today on the Karetour. At first I couldn't get into the small ring and later I couldn't get out of the small ring. I adjusted the cable tension at the locknut down at the mech and got around. I tried to sort this out at home but it's still not right. It changes ok but the inside of the shifter rubs in the low gears and I can only get 1-5 with ease on the small ring. Usually I have no trouble with 1-6 or even 1-7 on the smaller front ring and then 3-10 on the bigger.

At this stage I think I need to start again. So can anyone tell me how to reset it all in much the same way as if I'd replaced the cable. Secondly with a ten speed cassette what gears should be able to use/should use in the small/bug rings

    Many Thanks

    NMG few questions

It is probably not parallel to the chain. The park tools website has an excellent step by step guide.
