    Hi folks,

In our upstairs ensuite there is a foul smell from the toilet. There is a shower & sink in the bathroom that are both used regularily as is the toilet.

The smell isn't there all the time.
I have resealed the joints around the bottom of the toilet with silicon but the smell is still there on occasion.

Is there something else I could use to reseal around the toilet with or any other suggestions??
    thanks in advance

Had a similar problem a few years ago. Turned out to be a split in the sink u-bend.

Sounds like one or both of your traps, either the whb or shower tray trap is loosing its seal, it could be induced siphonage, caused by wavering out (wind outside blowing over the soil stack causing the water in the trap to empty) or if your shower/basin trap is full of hair, water can leave through capillary action causing the smell from the sewers to enter your room. Also if the waste was fitted incorrectly, the full bore of water from either your toilet or basin could be sucking the water from the shower trap, a few maybes for you, hope this helps :)

Does your trap on shower have an easy clean trap? Have you lifted it recently to get the clumps of hair out of it? Sometimes when putting it back, some people dont put it back right and its not sealed properly, check to see if the little black rubber washer is still on it...

I took up mine a while ago and didn't push it fully back in place, the smell was brutal until I pushed the easy clean trap down further.

Check that the drains are clear at the nearest manhole, it may be a partial blockage.

    Folks,
Thanks for all the suggestions above, plenty to check.
The drain is grand outside, checked a few weeks ago.

re the easy clean trap in the shower, I did have it out a while back, not sure if I can remember a little black washer,
if it is missing can they be purchased on their own?
    thanks again for the suggestions!!

Well just to update ye, it was like Mad M mentioned, I had removed the trap filter filter in the shower a hile back and never replaced it.
This was the source of the odour, as it went when I put in a new hair trap/ filter.

    regards & thanks for suggestions.
