    Hi all,

I'm going to buy a new desktop pc. I have all the accessories so its only the tower section I need. I was wondering what spec to go for? (ram/ processor etc). It will be used for the internet and some up to date games.

Also, where would be the best place to buy one?

    Cheers,
    Ted.

You'd be best of building one yourself, especially if gaming is what you want. Let me know if you want this moved over to pc building & upgrading where the lads there can advise :) .

    Cheers lads.

But I certainly don't have the required knowledge to build one myself so I will have to buy.

It will be mainly used for the internet.

I just don't want to get hoodwinked by some slimey shop assistant...

For a small fee (€20 or so) they will of course build it for you, you might still get a great bargain compared to some off the rails computer. Unless you want to support "de locals" and buy in an Irish store... ;)

The companies usually have a service where they'll build the machine for you for a few quid (€15~) on top of component costs. Shops won't carry gaming computers and yes you will be ripped off completely more than likely looking for a proper gaming ring in a B&M shop, simply as there isn't as much a market for them (majority of gamers build their own).
I would either ask the guys in PC building & Upgrading for a spec up or go for a decent Dell XPS (I think are the gaming ones? :o ) but yeah better off building yourself, or picking components and getting the company to put the machine together for you.
I would check out youtube though and see how easy it is to build a computer, will also be a great feeling once you get it up and running and another benefit is many components come with a 3+ year warranty.

At the moment Dell have gone to the dogs for quality. The only time they were considered was when the offer was on in Bargain Alerts on the gaming rig (can't remember the details).

No, the XPS are no longer marketed as gaming machines, you'll only get mediocre graphics adapters with those. If you want a gaming machine from Dell, you'll have to go to Alienware (or get some expensive aftermarket GPU upgrade).

I agree completely, it seems when Dell left Ireland they left build quality behind them!

as others have said get your pc custom built, it is a bit more hassle but you get a much better pc cheaper than a B&M one
