Come on motors forum, do your work!

Went out to the car (01 Saab 9-5 2.0t) just there. Unlocked and opened the windows a crack. Locked it up again. Went back out 20 mins later, opened fine, but when I went to turn it over got a high speed clicking sound. The air con isn't coming on and when I try and lock it the central locking pops open immediately. I tried jumping it and the jump lead clamps melted on both ends and the cables were warm. Also, when the cars were connected, I got nothing when I went to turn it on. All screens were dead. Now it is gone back the way it was. Turns on, runs it's start up check which it says is ok, but high speed clicking when I try and turn it over.

    Any takers?

It sounds like the stater, keep the wheel brace in the front and beat the **** out of the starter every time it won't start. It just needs a good slap but it's fecked, get it fixed.
    It's probably a diy job.

    Battery, 95% certain :)

Flick on your heads and see how quickly they fade.

Did you connect the leads properly? I seen them melt and catch fire when connected wrong.

Does it have a computer? Or possibly the fuses got wet/blown?

There's be no clicking if it was a fuse.
What fuses do you reckon are after possibly getting wet or after blown?

I may be wrong but I would think he'd have noticed a fire.

    Cheers for the help folks.
I wasn't sure it was the starter due to the multiple rapid clicks. I was harping the jump would prove it was the battery. I dont know why the leads went weird, it was wired up the right way though.

They're more than likely poor quality leads :)

The battery in the Saab is as dead as a dead thing and their is loads of currant been drawn through the poor quality leads thus heating them up :)

What car were you trying to jump it off?

He said "the jump lead clamps melted on both ends and the cables were warm"

    Common enough tbh.

Jumping off a focus. The cables were cheap enough from tesco.
I presumed the refusal of the central locking was due to a risk of locking people in the car.
Do you think the dead battery would explain the diagnostic running but the climate control screen not coming on?
Cheers by the way, it's much appreciated.

There's no doubt enough left in the battery to power low drain stuff, the climate control isn't low drain, presumably the climate control screen won't come on unless there's sufficent power to run climate control. Any car I've ever encountered the climate control comes on at key position 2 before starting the car.

Did you try the head lights yet ?

I dunno what size battery is in your Focus but I wouldn't be surprised at it not starting a 2.0 Saab.

I was on a rush out earlier so only heading home now. Picked up a set of heavy duty halfords leads so they should hold up better.
I haven't tried the headlights, I will when I get home. They come on automatically anyway.
I have a meter at home so I can check the voltage on the battery anyway.

JIM I had similar thing in my car.
Opened door (manually by the key) and central lock did not work (should pop all doors open), I did not know at that stage that something was wrong. Got into car, got dash on but then fast clicking noise when trying to start it. It was battery after all, but even some mechanic was telling me over the phone that something else was wrong. Well, he was wrong :) Not sure if thats 100% same thing in your car but sounds pretty much close..

When checking the battery, check it while someone trys yo turn it over.

If the battery isn't a sealed unit, open it and pop in some red wine to refresh the electrolytes and then try the jump leads.

    What's the science behind that?
    Not being smart, genuinely curious.

Many thanks to the board, I was able to easily jump it using my new heavy duty cables and my neighbours 320d. Took it for a good drive and it's running fine. I'll pick up a new battery tomorrow. I wasn't giving Halfords 130 euro for one.
    Now.....

The radio must have tripped out trying to start the car. I swapped the fuse with the brake light one, still didn't come on. Swapped that fuse back to the brake lights and they still work, so what else could it be? It's not asking for a code, and the SID is not displaying an error.
    Anyone have experience of this?

    EDIT*** owners manual doesn't help.

Some modern "sealed" batteries can be screwed open so long as they're not maintenance free ones.

If that doesn't work, try putting some Red Bull and Vodka and a few lines of coke in there too....

OP, you need a new battery.

My advice actually works. Tried & tested and not only from a video on youtube. Yours is just nonsense. :)

Yes the Op needs a new battery but the red wine will be enough to give a bit of a kick until they do get around to getting a new one.

Cheers lads. Like I said, I am buying a new battery tomorrow and hugely relieved that's all it is. Only have the car a week and you fear the worst.

Right now I am more concerned with getting the radio back working....

Tried. Done. Countless times. No problems. No battery in my face. Time to stay stum I think.

To say someone deserves battery acid in their face is the height of stupidity. Don't think you're being funny or big by making a remark like that.

Yeah, 20 times. Turned the volume up etc. tried to scroll through stations but nothing. Nothing on the SID and unresponsive stereo.

Doesn't matter. Once it's something you can't drink, it's all good!

Surely the acidity would matter, what types have you used?

Tesco brand Chile. :D Was also a bottle I used that was given to me in work. Tasted like pure vinegar. An Australian wine in a black wide bottle and yellow label. Don't remember the name. Quite the wine connoisseur me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,844 ✭✭✭Jimdagym

Speaking of wine, still cant get radio powered. New fuse didn't help, as I knew.

Very quiet in this car with no tunes folks :(

Have my whimsy iPhone sitting in the cupholder trying to break the silence.
I've ordered stereo removal keys. Does anyone know if the factory stereo has a fuse in the back?

Yeah I know but that was only on "real Saab's"pre 2000 maybe?, when GM took them over they dispensed with that feature. My one did not have this feature and she was a 02 model.

If I can remember correctly, there is a control unit I think under the passenger seat that controls various things around the car, not sure exactly and there is another unit that controls another set of items.Maybe a loose connection or similar on one of these if it is controlling the SID.A manual will tell you all, or ask on this forum

Thanks for the link. My problem is I definatelty blew something when I was jumping it, just a question of whether its a fuse in the back or something a lot more serious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,844 ✭✭✭Jimdagym

Nearly there folks, a final push and we are there :D

Got the radio removal keys today. Whipped it out and there is a 5A blade fuse on the back which sure enough was toast. Replaced that and put the stereo back. We have power to the radio but no sound. Not a dickie bird. No crackling or nothing. Its like the radio is off.

Can anyone think of something? I am so close I can practically hear the just a minute quiz.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,865 ✭✭✭✭MuppetCheck

Is everything connected as it should be? Removing a radio can dislodge the connections. Remove it again and double check.

I have removed it and reslotted it a couple of times. There are no wires connected to the stereo, it is ports in a fixed position that it slots into. t feels positive enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,844 ✭✭✭Jimdagym

T' be sure, T' be sure I just whipped out the radio again and the climate control and reconnected the radio with my hand behind the radio ensuring all the connections were being made. They are, so can pretty much rule they out.

Sorry, I only saw this thread now.

Talked to my man and he's (as am I :D) of the opinion that at some point the jump leads were crossed and that the radio is knackered. There's no other reason why it shouldn't be working. Call Dara @ 0866006602 and he'll sort you with a replacement faily cheap if you want ;)

Thanks for the offer. I won't avail of it just yet, I do have power to the stereo, just no sound (and the leads weren't crossed!!!!!).

I doubt it tbh, enough of a surge to blow a 5A fuse going into a low current item like a stereo will have fried it!
But keep going, ill be glad to be proved wrong:)

You may well be right. Sort of makes the fuse pointless though.

I rang your buddy ed. he doesn't have one, but will keep an eye out. Problem could be the amp if I have one, and changing the head won't fix that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,844 ✭✭✭Jimdagym

    It's alive!!!!!

20A fuse for the amp was sitting there, all burned out and all.
Never even entered my head to check for an amp fuse.

Sitting in the house like this --> :)
