Loud neighbours

As the title suggests, it's this eternal problem again.

I'm in 6th year and its almost June. I really cant afford to deal with this. Every night without fail, usually at 10pm when I go to bed on a schoolnight they start their parties (if thats what you'd even call it), and I'm kept awake for hours. Their music is so loud that it sounds like it's in the next room. Right now I've had 5 hours sleep because of them and I have my Irish oral tomorrow, not fun.

I know what they're doing is illegal (way too late/early to make noise) and my dad's found weed joints in our garden after some of the parties, but they're the types who failed the LC, never did and never will do anything with their lives and would not give a crap if we knocked into their house to tell them to be quiet and would only make everything louder.

Sounds stupid but I'm (maybe its justified) getting extremely angry over it. Distractingly angry almost. I'm sitting here like a zombie listening to them and I have 40% of an exam tomorrow which I'm counting for points...and I want to do well. They're so ignorant!!

Anyone got any advice for blocking out noise / any ways to stop the noise? :/

It takes time to deal with such problems, and efforts are not always successful.

Your needs are short-term, so it might be worth looking at ways to deal with the problem at your end rather than theirs. Two ideas to try:
    - Use earplugs (a suggestion I found recently in another thread made by somebody who said that they helped her a lot);
    - Sleep elsewhere, at least on nights before exams. Have you family connections or friends with spare beds?

I might have to try earplugs haha. I do but the problem is it'd either be someone nearby (which would probably still have the problem, though to a lesser extent) or if they were far away its a problem since I live very near my school.
Agus go raibh maith agat! :D

Well firstly, I do really really sympathise, but a superior attitude such as above isn't going to get you anywhere. I get that you're angry though and it's a very stressful time, but that's no reason to say that they must have failed their LC and their lives are worthless - that's a bit of a stretch. I know plenty of people with degrees that party and smoke joints (I'm not saying it's ok, but it certainly doesn't make them worthless).

Anyway, step 1 is to tell them. I know you say it wont make a difference, but you have to try it to find out. If it doesn't get better, go over again and tell them that you'll be ringing the gardaí if it continues. Warning them is important as it will stand to your case that you tried to settle it personally first. If they continue, call the gardaí.

As for earplugs, I'd advise you to buy some of them anyway, they did me a world of good for my LC. There'll always be some kind of noise bugging you, it happened to nearly everyone I know, that the more noises they got rid of, the more they were annoyed by tiny sounds. Earplugs are good for getting you focused and drowning out distractions.

Find out if they are owners or tenants. People with little regard for their neighbours or for building good relationships in their community are often just tenants. If they had invested thousands in a property they might be inclined to take more care all round. Anyhoo, if they are tenants get in touch with their landlord immediately listing very calmly everything they are doing to cause a nuisance. If you google the address you might find the original To Let ad and you can start there. They could be a local authority tenant so that's who you would contact there. A note in their letterbox explaining the situation very politely might help. If all else fails you can give them a taste of their own medicine - play very loud music first thing in the morning when they are bound to be still asleep. And make sure you stay within the law. By the way, if any more evidence of weed- smoking is found then the Gardai are the ones to contact. Good luck with your exams.

So people are coming and going late at night and there are drugs on the premises
And they are tossing drugs onto your property where minors are present, that's you

Inform the local station and hope they arrive to check the place maybe

Yeah, I guess it was a bad thing to say, I was just really cranky. They did actually all fail though except one, they were in my school. I know people who smoke it too but what annoyed me was something I forgot to mention in my OP - my entire house stank of smoke last night, including everything in my room and I have asthma so it was really irritating for that to happen.
    Hi there

I am a big fan of ear plugs as I live in a city centre. The best ones I ever got were from Boots. The foam ones don't work for me, they simply fall out.

Get the ones that come in a plastic travel case, you get three pairs and they are a sticky jelly-like substance. I cannot recommend them enough. I got mine in Boots on London, although I am sure you can get them in Boots here if you look around. They cost £5.

    Great investment.

All the best with your exams. I know it is a really stressful time for you and a good sleep is very important.

    :)
Cool, thanks sunflower, I'll give those a try! :) Lets just hope I hear my alarm with them haha. And thanks for the good wishes :)

Nah, they're owners, they've lived there for as long as I've been around. I think their parents leave them the house or something like that. I'd be worried about saying it to them in case they made a point of getting louder though. We have a really loud old record player that I didnt even realize still worked til my dad mentioned it, might come in handy :D Thank you for your advice :)

Yeah, my dad said he'll probably do that if he has to, it'd be worrying though since we'd be the obvious ones doing it. But if we have to I suppose we will!

Thank you all so much for your advice :)

Just to let you know I've had an alarm ringing all night and day here and ive final year college assessments tomorrow, I found small headphones/proper ear plugs in are good but those + big headphones block everything out its like I can still hear a lot of the noise through the back of my ear if that makes sense, a pillow(esp duck down) and your duvet over your head helps and try and study in school, the library a friends house if possible, during my last assesments I had noisy neighbours tv on all night and I couldnt relax in the place I was so tensed up.

Yeah I use my earphones but they're so uncomfortable to sleep with in your ears and as soon as they fall out the noise wakes me up :( Its not so much study its just the lack of sleep! I've been ducking under my duvet anyway, it does help yeah :P
Yes, put the alarm near your head. :D I live near a church that has very loud church bells and have slept through them with those plugs - and I am a light sleeper!!!

I am delighted I found them. Best night's sleep since I moved here :D
They sound excellent, I'll definitely try them, thanks for the tip! :D

I've gotten plenty of good advice and my dad said enough is enough and that he'll call into them if it happens again, so this thread can be closed now :)
    Thanks guys! :D

For tonight download some white noise sounds, like ocean waves, and either play them through your computer or put them on you mp3 player in a speaker dock. Play them when you want to sleep at top volume and they should cancel out a lot of the noise coming from nextdoor.
