Fail Final Year Exams? (Engineering)

    Hey,

So my finals start in two weeks and I haven't started studying. My thesis ended up being a serious pain and i got a pretty long extension on it. Its due in on monday and so I'll start studying Monday afternoon.

However, I have ten exams and the majority of my year have been studying for the past four weeks. Theres a good chance that I'll fail one of them. Does anyone know what happens in final year engineering if you fail an exam?

I have excellent cont. assesment and my thesis should be a II.1. How easy is it to compensate and get the honours degree? My thesis being late was my own fault so no sympathy from college on that front. If i fail one exam, can i resit it in August and get the pass degree, or do i have to redo the entire year? Do I have to pay for it?

    Thanks for any advice.

Thanks, I've read that already. So basically, i need at least 40% in every subject. If i fail one, then I have to resit them the following year to get the ordinary degree.

I'm wondering how easy would it be to defer my exams till august. I know that its possible, but never heard of anyone in engineering doing it. I'll ask my superviser and tutor on monday, but just wondering if anyone knows? Also, is it possible to pass all these exams on two weeks study? I just dont want to sit them and fail, only to find out that i could have defered them no hassle.

I'd be sure to triple check that it *is* possible to defer final exams til later in the summer: a friend of mine was not allowed to do that (and she had genuine health reasons for not sitting them in May, she was in hospital!); instead she had to take the following year off-books and sit the exams at the end of that year. However this was in an arts subject, rather than engineering. Beyond contacting your supervisor and personal tutor, perhaps enquire with the EO in the engineering course office? Good luck!

Read it again. You can fail up to 2 exams provided your average is over 40%.

And that those exams don't total more than 10 ECTS credits.

Jonathon is right...it was the one piece of knowledge that got me through all of my exams even if I didn't need it in the end... technically you could get zero in 2 of your the exams and still pass as long as your average is above 40.

Also you cant repeat in august you'd have to wait to do them again next year and you'd have to do another thesis...and they only allow that if you've a proper reason...seeing as you admit the thesis was your own fault cant imagine you have a proper reason...although you can always lie and make up a reason

Oh and yes you'd have to pay to do to repeat the year...although for some reason think it's slightly reduced if you haven't sat the exams...not sure on that though.

If you sit them and fail more than 2 or dont have an average of over 40% then they will give you a pass ordinary degree, you can go back then and redo the year as i mention above and redo thesis resit exams but no matter what grade you get you are getting a pass honours degree.

So if you think you really are not going to pass and you have the money speak to your supervisor and try and think of a reason not to sit exams this year and hope next year thesis will go better

Wow, I should really read things more carefully :). Thanks for pointing that out, and thanks bradyle for the info on repeats.

I've decided I'm going to sit them. I really can't see myself surviving another thesis! Also I think, even in the limited time I have, I can pass 7/9 exams pretty comfortably. I don't usually get below a I or a II.1, so my results are going to be a bit of a shock to my parents/f*ck up my CV. But hey, whats life without a few surprises and bumps along the way! I'll hopefully manage a II.2 and do the best I can with that before a masters later on. Thanks for the help!
