Online equivalent to Gnu mailman for distribution list?

    Hi,

Apologies if this is not the correct forum to post. My question relates to setting up an email distribtion list.

I am familar with using Gnu "mailman" as I used to use it for various college clubs/socities. Basically you would set up a list, add people to it (or allow them to subscribe themselves) and then they could unsubscribe themselves from it if the wished. To send to the entire list, you just needed to send to "listname@domain.ie" or whatever and it would be automatically distributed to all the list members. It also had various moderator and filter/spam settings to prevent abuse of the list (i.e you could restrict who posted to the list).

I was wondering if there is an equivalent to this online.
I think that I could set up contacts on a new gmail account, and then add each address as an automatic forwarding address. Then if I send to that address, it will go to everyone. However that means anyone replying will spam the other people on the list and there will be no automatic unsubscribe option. I don't want something that people have to log into. Just what I described above.

    Anyone know of anything?

    Thanks a million

Hey, thanks for the reply but I think I may not have been clear. I don't currently have access to a server to install software on. I was thinking more along the line of something online. i.e somewhere (preferably free) that I can set up an account and use it to manage a list. Preferably something that has the ability to allow me to restrict the addresses to a whitelist from which it will accept postings, and allow automatic unsubscriptions.

Do hosting packages from the like of Blacknight give you some proper access to the server or do they only let you drag-and-drop your files across? I'm just not sure how those work. Would I just need to rent their lowest package if I wanted to, say, use their mail server to host my list.

If I had my own server, I'd just install Gnu mailman on it! I thought something like Yahoo groups might be an option, but then I read some dodgy stories about it not being too secure

Also, to explain a bit better my stream of thinking, although I personally used to be able to log into the server that hosted mailman, I managed the lists through a web interface. There was a password set for each list and anyone could log into the system from anywhere to administer it. They did not need an account on the machine itself.

I'm wondering if there are (legit) places online that supply this service

Thanks. I guess I always just feel a bit stupid asking these kind of basic newbie questions ;) . Sometimes I don't even know what I'm asking!

Something like Blacknight is my backup plan if I can't find a free one online!

All the alternatives here are the same as mailman so yahoo or googlegroups are your only free options methinks...

Give it a day or so though, I'd be surprised if someone isin't along with something.:pac:

You can use something like PHPList for mailing lists. Fairly powerful application with plenty of features
