Any suggestions for a career for a secondary school teacher considering getting out of teaching?

In this climate it will prove difficult but not impossible. You have to decide what direction you would like your career to move in. The advantage with being a teacher is you will have some time in the summer to investigate possible options.
If you can indicate what career path you would like to pursue it would help for further advice..

    Hi,

    thanks for the reply.

would be interested in something more office based but in education

e.g. deputy principal - perhaps (realise still some teaching with this)

    adult education organiser,

adult guidance co-ordinator (would need to do guidance course i know)

or any jobs similar to the above or even of lower status/pay too but can't think of any

Why exactly do you want to get out of teaching? Are you looking for a new challenge in the educational area or do you not want to be in the classroom anymore?

    it's a mixture of both

i'm finding the classroom tough going to be honest (have some discipline problems) and tired of all the planning, corrections I do night after night

it's draining and ive lost my enthusiam for it to be honest.

How would you feel about tackling discipline then as a DP? I know it's a different role, not being in the classroom and being a DP would mean you would have a different status, but would you feel happy doing it?

Is there any other area that interests you outside of education?

    Hi,

Yea the idea of deputy principal and supporting discipline in schools is something i would be interested in

i put up two recent posts on this area - the titles are along the lines of

    1. postgrad diploma in leadership and management
    and
    2. deputy principal/discipline

other interests perhaps educational psychology but this would be too long a road imo. i would firstly have to do a psychology degree/conversion course followed by post grad educational psychology which i think is a doctorate now! I am married with one child so tied to a location too.
I don't think id have the finance, time or energy to commit to this with no guarantee of getting the postgrad and then being tied to a location because of my family circumstances.

Could you get a job with with of the pharmacuetical companies then? Or if discipline is an issue would it be worth investigating moving to another school and start again?

yes, I suppose that is an idea. I had hoped to stay in the education system though to make use of my experience in education but that is another option I could look into. I would probably need to upskill though. I will research to see if are online/evening masters/post grads in that area. I would ideally hope for a position where I would have some interaction with people also as opposed to being in a lab on my own all day - that is what i had envisaged but maybe i am wrong. I will look into it.

    thanks!

My friend works in one of the pharmaceutical companies and they are looking for redundancies all the time so I would imagine that would be hard to crack into without experience. If discipline is a big issue why not do a course to learn some new tips and strategies? Also cant understand why you would want a DP role if discipline isnt your forte! Science teachers are wanted all over the world. Have you considered a move abroad for a change of scenery? Marking work in the sun maybe wouldnt feel so bad!!

You know the way that various companies like to "give something back" by preparing educational resources for schools - thinking of Intel's skoool.ie, google's science stuff or some of the materials that pharmaceutical companies make available for schools? Well perhaps you could approach it from that angle, using your science background and your classroom and curriculum experience to help expand on these. Find the corporations that seem to have an interest in assisting schools and approach them to see if they can offer you something.
Do you have an incremental job? Can you take a career break for a year? My guess is that if you did manage to get a job like I described, then it would be a 6 month contract.
