Samsung rf711

I bought a samsung rf711 laptop a few days ago and I asked your man in the shop could the RAM be upgraded to 16GB if possible and he said yes. Now I bought the laptop and doing a quick search on the net I see that 8GB is the max upgrade. There are two slots available for memory modules. He told me I would have to get 2 8GB DDR3 memory modules and it would work. I asked twice to make sure before I bought it. At first I was going to purchase a Toshiba laptop with similiar specs but the samsung had a full HD screen and had a blu-ray player and was a better machine so I stuck with that.

This laptop is a fine machine but one of the reasons I bought it was because he said that it could support 16GB of RAM and the fact that I would get my VAT back of 200 euro when I purchased. Every other aspect of the laptop I am happy with for my needs. Before anyone asks what the hell I want 16GB of RAM for, lets just say I'm into powerful computers big time and always want an aspect of upgrading when purchasing anything.

According to Samsung and Crucial, 8GB is indeed the maximum supported. But you'll never know...

Go to some computer store and ask them if they can try 2 x 8 GB (if it works, you should have the decency to buy from them although it might be cheaper to buy online). ;)

Maybe it might work but I wouldnt think so. It would support one single 8GB module but I wouldnt think it would support the other when it says 8GB max.

Surprised your man in the computer shop didn't know this when selling me a laptop. Just goes to show how some of these people really haven't a clue.

Do you really need 16GB of ram?

Maybe he knows something, Samsung and Crucial don't know? ;)

Found this answer on a Samsung board:
The Samsung RF711-S03 17.3-Inch Notebook has probably about everything you need. You can go to 16 gb ram if you want, but the built-in 8 should be enough. There is a 2nd drive bay for additional storage...

Since you bought it in a shop, I'd go back to "your man" and ask him to put in 16 GB... the easiest way to find out.

I must go back anyway so I will ask him to put the RAM in for me. The guy seemed to or convinced me that he knew his stuff. The best thing I can do is buy one 8GB DDR3 module and slot it in to the computer and leave the other 4GB Ram module alone and if it works then it will support two 8GB modules.

As I said, you don't have to buy if it doesn't work, just ask him to fit 16 GB and see if it works.

Bought an RF711 the other day and so far very happy with it.

According to this thread on http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18398010. 16Gb does indeed work.
