Firstly it may be illegal to rip the DVDs.
iirc under uk law you're allowed to backup, not sure about Irish law.
Secondly it's typically not possible to copy/paste.
If the DVDs are data disks that just contain standard movie container files such as *.avi, *.mov etc the you can copy paste.

If they are DVDs designed to be played on a standard DVD player and there are Video_TS folders etc then you need to 'rip' the DVDs. There are several free applications that do this. DVDshrink springs to mind.

Yep, use DVDFab Decrypter and save the DVDs as ISO on your HDD. Yoy can then create a new DVDs from those images, if ever required. Many mediaplayers (i.e. VLC, SMPlayer) will play the ISOs without mounting them as virtual DVDs.

Mod note: Discussion of ripping DVD discs for personal use is allowed. This is akin to ripping a music CD to put on a MP3 player (which is considered under "fair use"), what isn't allowed is discussion of ripping DVDs for purposes of piracy.

I have used DVD43 and Handbrake.I have transferred 42 dvds to an external drive without any problem. http://download.cnet.com/HandBrake/3000-2194_4-10808250.html ,http://www.dvd43.com/

If they're just normal personal dvds, so to speak, then DVDShrink should do the job.

Mind you, I'd advise you ripping to PC first, the copy n pasting to external HDD.
Might be a bit too much strain on your PC, dvd drive, external HDD trying to rip straight across to the HDD.

I think manna452121 has the best idea if you want to store the movies as video files on the hard drive however it can take a while to rip an entire movie. If you want an identical virtual replica of the disk making an iso would be the best option. It is also much quicker :D
