short or long spins???

    hi guys,
    hoping to do the 110km category of the tour de burren in june.however due to work committments i can only get out twice a week for the next 5/6 wks.tues and thurs with a club,40km,28/29km average approx.i could swap one of these nights for a long sun morning spin(80kmapprox)but at a much slower pace with a smaller group.so basically my question is which 2 of these 3 possible spins will i benefit from the most??

    You are aiming for a 110km tour that will take approx 4-5 hours ride time.

    An 80km Sunday morning spin will take 3-4 hours with your smaller group.

    Your evening spins are over in 1:10 to 1:20.

    My opinion would be, to transition more to the Sunday morning spins to acclimatise yourself to hours in the saddle as opposed to speedier km's as your basic fitness is good enough to get you through.

    I'd be of the opposite opinion. Go and get a fast short workout rather than a slow plod.

    Welcome to the cycling forum;)

    TBH, 110km is not that far in the context of teh distance you will be doing, even on the shorter spins.

    You could do the shorter spins on a regular basis, and throw in the longer one every few weeks. If you're struggling with the distance, do more of the longer spins. If the distance is no problem but you want to get a bit faster, do some more of the shorter ones

    Sorry for the confusion - if I was the cause. From your previous posts I saw you started back on the bike last October and have recently comp;eyed the Stephen Roche Atlantic Challenge in 3:20...

    I am engrossed in the Cyclists Training Bible by Joe Friel at the moment and for some bizarre reason I think I am qualified to give training advice to other newbies :rolleyes::eek:

    To put it bluntly I am all in favour of ass in the saddle time while building and for the ahem 'more mature cyclist' the stress on joints/recovery etc is so much less on longer endurance spins.

    That;s my 'advice' for what it's worth - probably not much.:)
