ive got a smallish stove, sitting on a slate hearth, top flue with 90 degree elbow....

how low or high can a mantle piece be from the top of the stove?

    also another question

what can be used behind them to give a nice finish?
at the mo we have a 600x600 slate which cracked in half with the heat but we were thinking of sticking this to the wall and getting another piece to sit on top of that one and go up to the underside of the mantle piece...
ive seen them fire boards but they look terrible, cant use brick as i dont have the room behind the stove as it sits out around 2-3" from the wall...ive also been told i could use porcelin tiles but the priblem is the finish along the side of them and i dont want to use the trim to finish it off....

im open to ideas or pics anyone can share with me :D
