Because Laser is not a Maestro debit card, it is a Laser card. They are two separate debit card systems (though somewhat related). Only in extremely rare cases does a Laser card get accepted as a Maestro card.

The Maestro logo is not to do with the debit card function, it has other purposes. Laser is not a Maestro debit card, it's as simple as that.

Maestro cards cannot be used for Cardholder Not Present transactions in countries other than where it is issued.

It can be used in person where ever the maestro/mastercard sign is displayed, so you can use it on holiday in New Zealand, but not if you are buying from a new zealand website.

Also, it is not good for giving as a deposit for car rental / hotel stays unless a pre-auth is taken.

Good news - it will soon be replaced with a visa debit card from AIB.
