Its an expensive place to live.
wages are good but thats because the cost of living is high.
camp life can be good if you get a decent or horrible if you get a bad one.
camps are pretty strict on no alcohol and zero tolerance to drugs. You will have regular urine tests.
it will be freezing in winter but summers are warm to hot

I've not been to Fort McMurray myself but lived in Calgary and know people who work up there. My boyfriend and I seriously considered it ourselves but decided against it. It's dubbed "Mordor" cause its so ugly and is a bit of a gold rush town - full of casinos, prostitutes, drugs etc. But the truth is if u keep ur chin clean u can make serious money there. It is very expensive to rent a place and ur best bet would be to get into a camp. U would prob have to share a dorm type accomodation. It's not the kind of work u would want to do for the rest of ur life but the best place I can think of to make serious money quickly and legally:)
Seriously cold in winter and hot and dusty in summer. There's always a price to pay!

The best advice for Fort Mac is get up there... you'll hear so many stories about the place good & bad that you have to go there and see it yourself. there are loads of opportunities there both skilled & unskilled. I know there is an irish community in fort mac of recently arrived immigrants so if I were you i'd get up there and network ;) I'm not going to go on about how expensive accommodation is etc as I'm sure you've done some reasearch? if you haven't then don't go.

Hi, I was just reading this and thought I would pass on the following information in case it is of help to anyone.
There is a Canadian company that specialises in recruiting foreign workers into Canada and that includes Irish workers. It is not for the main cities but the likes of Fort Mac and others certainly have a lot of opportunites. A friend of mine is currently dealing with them for a mechanic position but they have a whole range of positions.
Their website is www.diamondglobal.ca and the email I was given is ireland@diamondglobal.ca. I hope this might help someone.

we did it, having the family move over made settling in easier really.
When you've to go and get set-up with schools, doctor etc you get
into the swing of things fairly quickly, and besides which you meet
loads of people of the same age through your children be that at
school or the playground. good luck
