This kind of sneaked in under the radar recently into dealerships here. It has replaced the traditional Impreza wagon and is meant to be a crossover rival for the likes of the Nissan Quashqai and new Mazda CX3 but has 4wd as standard. Only available with the 2.0 boxer diesel engine here in Ireland but even though it is well equipped at €35k ex works, the price seems hefty enough given the competition. Looks wise, it has typical quirky Subaru styling and not sure about the Irish market but there are some loud colours available including bright orange and lime.

    Thoughts, opinions?

It's dimensions are almost identical to the OLD Forester before it became a SUV. That car was actually ahead of it's time as a real cross-over. I really wish they replaced it with something in the same mould.

This doesn't have the utilitarian-cool of the old Forester. They just jacked up an Impreza and...voila!...a Quasqai competitor.

Mind you, I haven't seen it in the flesh.

Bit expensive to be honest, almost Forrester price, which is a much better option.
Quashquai owners won't even consider it.

I saw a silver one recently. It's nothing to look at, ungainly from the rear. I have read several reviews online and they have not been entirely positive.

For that money the Q3 looks a lot better.

I agree, I think it will be a novelty to see one of these on our roads. You really do have to question the thoughts of the marketing folks at Subaru.

For that money the Q3 looks a lot better.

I'm real close to buying a car and really like the XV - I have read many comments like yours on various reviews of the cars - surely the 4WD 2.0D Q3 is 9,000 more expensive than this?

So yes there's a 2WD Q3 at this price point (35K), but AFAIK it don't have cruise control, auto wipers, climate control, rear parking cam - I'm not sure even if metalic paint is included in these prices - the 2WD Q3 would be 38K and equivalent 4WD diesel Q3 would be 47K surely?

I'm not knocking the Q3 - it by all accounts it's a superb car and if I was spending mid to high 40s on a car I'd love one - am I missing something here - can I have a 4WD Q3 with some nice toys (like reverse camera/cruise/climate con/bluetooth) for mid/late 30s?

The Forester with equivalent spec is 3k more (about 38,750 on the road) - so it's an option for me also just the current model feels more dated that the XV - also Subaru dealers seem to be aggressively discounting cars - they're discounting (adding more to my trade in value than Hyundai are with their ix35 or Nissan with their QQ) - also there's another 330 off as subaru are also doing free road tax.

I drove an XV around Lusk the other day - and it makes the ix35/Qashqai feel like rubbish ( the 2.0 Diesel boxer engine I loved).

Fine there are other "premium" crossovers out there (Volvo, Audi, BMW etc) but none of them can offer a 4WD Diesel with modern toys at anything like this price - if any can please let me know at I'd hate to buy this car and be told later I could have had an equivalent Q3 for close to that price!

Someone talk me out of this car and tell me what I should be spending 35K on instead - needs to be one of these "Crossover" SUVs with 4WD/Cruise/Reverse sensors/bluetooth/climate control) - what are other options to this car (I've also looked at the Yeti)

Sat in one at a dealership not so long ago. Was just having a chat with the salesperson about it and according to him the price was way too high and they hadn't sold a single Subaru in at least six months.

I thought it was fine but the interior wasn't up to standard with hard plastics and bland design.

The high price is because of the high value of the yen at the minute afaik
