Stick the handlebar mount on the steering wheel?

Thats an idea alright but ideally it'd be on the passenger side.

Zip-tie it to an "open" air vent?

Get one of the standard garmin window-sucker mounts and zip-tie the bike mount to that to ensure that you get proper signal.

With all the clutter and potential for banging it i'd prefer to have it on a suction mount on the windscreen.

Thats leads me to another question, is it possible to get spare bike mounts?

Assuming the 800 uses the same 1/4 turn mount as the 500:

I never understood why you get a million elastic bands for just two mounts. Would people really move the mount from bike to bike that often?

Have your passenger hold onto the Garmin, the displays a bit small to be looking at whilst driving...

If the steering wheel has an air bag fitted, fitting anything to the steering wheel is a bad idea.

For what we're using it for it'd have to be mounted to be honest but thanks anyway.

Also now that i'm on the subject, i'm having a problem with 2 of the garmins.

We have 3 relatively new units and we were using them for the First nation Home event. 2 of them keep turning themselves off just after the "locating satellites" screen pops up. Even if they're fully charged. The fact that its happening to 2 of them suggests that this might be quite common.

Before i go contacting the support service i was wondering has anybody had the same problem?

They power off after 15mins of inactivity, like if you just leave it searching for satellites it will go off..

You could try disabling the Auto-power off? Menu--> System--> System Setup--> Auto Power Down - Select Off

Would be worth connecting them to a computer and doing a firmware update on them anyway.
