A good actor VS choosing the right roles?

To make a long story short :)
Was just browsing around looking at film news sites and came across a few posts from people saying "XXX actor is better than XXX" or "are you really comparing XXX to XXX?!" So I decided to start this thread here :p

What is a good actor? What is more important - talent and skills or choosing the right roles? ... for example a great actor can have a crappy character in a crappy movie and recieve negitive feedback/comments from that. While a 'passable' actor, heck even an actor who isnt the best, can have an interesting role in an interesting movie to only then recieve praise and be considered "a good actor" by peers.

Anyone else agree with this? or even care to add :)

I'd say good/better than or bad/worse than, is a matter of opinion.

You have a point that if an actor knows what suits him best, you will choose the correct roles and make a career for himself.
Then again, you have some actors that are so good, that shine even in crappy films - and again it's a matter of opinion what you would consider as "shine even in crappy films". For me, there are certain actors/actresses that I always like to see, even if the film sounds s**t.

personally i'd rather a worse actor that looks better for the part. I have Adrian Beaky in mind, and his role in the new Predators movie. Like he's a damn fine actor, he's just not anything what i want for the lead of a Predator's movie. So i'd rather someone like The Rock to be in a sci-fi thriller/horror movie, an ass-kicking muscled up dude.
