Place AND Time in Cork for beginners (fishing)

Hi everyone, I'm sorry if this was already discussed, I DID try to searching.

So the story is, my friend and I decided to get a new hobby, and we chose fishing. We have two fishing rods, which we don't really know how to use, but anyway.

We live in Cork. Around two weeks ago we went on our first "fishing" tour. We set out in the direction of Dripsey and Coachford, along the river at around seven in the morning. We stopped a few times in various places along the road, and tried fishing, including in places where there were other fishermen (but very few). We didn't succeed at all. I think this is because the time was completely wrong. All the water was gone, the tide was low, and we didn't even SEE a single fish.

We used a simple earthworm as a bait.

So if you have any good places for fishing, paid or unpaid, please share with us. Also, when is the best time to fish?
    Thanks.

Could you tell us what type of rods you got? There is a infinite amount of them out there and they all have the particular type of fishing they are suited to. If you are unsure how to describe it type what is written on the side near where the reel goes or take a phone pic or something and put it up.

Cork has an abundance of places to fish, be it the sea, lakes, rivers. Some place you pay, most are free.

Where ye were fishing was the Innishcarra reservoir. Its a coarse fishery whereby the fish are returned to the water after catching them. Coarse fishing equipment is kinda specialist (although ye could have got lucky)

So tell us the gear ye have and we'll set you right here and you'll be posting in here soon :)

I don't want to sound like a smartarse but the water you were fishing was the resevoir and therefore is not tidal. It's low because of the lack of rain over the last few months.

You're such a smartass :) But ok, can you suggest a good place AND time for fishing? Say this weekend.

but we don't really know how to use the reel just yet, so we use it as a classic fishing rod with a hook, float and a sinker.

Ok, my best suggestion so would be to watch plenty of fishing vids on youtube. That'll give you an idea how to go about the whole thing if your knowledge is as basic as you say.

Maybe if ye are starting out as ye are, and based on the pic you posted of the rod, I would say try some sea fishing first. It's probably the easiest of all forms of fishing and you've plenty of places to do that around cork.

The point where the river dripsey meets the reservoir by dripsey village can be a fun spot to fish, just access by the bridge and follow the river down to the deeper water, lots of (small)brown trout and often bream too...
I used to fish here with very basic trout worm fishing set up and catch trout and bream easy enough...
do some more research into where and what you want to catch,or just go to a tackle shop spend a little money and ask questions...

And,,don't forget that if you are fishing the Inniscarra Dam area,,you need to have a permit.

I'm new to Cork as well so following on rather than starting a new thread.

I prefer just to use a few spinners (flying c mainly) and have 2 rods (one is a spinning rod).

I've heard the Inniscarra dam has Salmon? is this true, or cant you take any fish home if you catch them there? not that i'm greedy:D

Looking to get out for my first trip this weekend, getting license tomorrow then permits for wherever you think might be a good place to start.

    thanks for the help
