They might let you use the toilets for nothing.

I'd like to know answer also. I've always heard of people going to airport not caring where they are going, go on stand by and off you go for cheap. Never in Ireland though, never heard of anyone trying.

Lad I know in England said he got to L.A twice out of three times for feck all.

Nope, quite the opposite, last minute bookings are really expensive. Generally only used by business people (paid be employer) and people who are in a huge rush to get somewhere e.g. a funeral and so they are willing to pay a high price

Indeed - the above is true. No matter how many times it gets answered on this board, this one will never die it seems ;)

You can get on a flight very cheaply at short notice if you know the right people though :)

I think this is something that people just get off the movies and tv. Maybe it happened at one stage back in the 80's or before but not now unfortunately

I'd say even mid-90s. It used to be possible to get cheaper flights on standby, before the likes of Ryanair started driving prices down, but now
    a) people's idea of a cheap flight is a hell of a lot less than it used to be and
    b) airlines have worked out that in general people booking at the last minute need to travel urgently and can be charged sky-high fares

Yea, I know some people who have family members who work for airlines and they get on standby lists. But it doesn't happen for regular folk. :(

It's probably increasingly difficult to do that as airlines are now so into online sales, particularly in Ireland and Europe generally.

You might get some interesting long-haul destination cheap if you're willing to board at a random time.

There used to be standby alright.

It does, by the way, still make sense for the airlines to allow some standby, and I mean at the very last minute. In fact hotels should sell bedrooms for cheap too, at about 10pm. But they are wary of diluting their brand.

If the hotel isn't full, or the airplane neither, anybody paying anything is a net gain.

Family members would probably make it easier alright, but if you know the right people to ask, then you dont need to be family.
It always amazes me the way people go and ask a drone at a desk for something and then give up. ALWAYS, ALWAYS make sure you are talking to a decision maker. And that goes for everything, from your bank manager to someone in a shop where you are looking for a discount.

The biggest part of the battle is finding out who the real decision maker is. Once you get that you know who to talk to forever after.
