Hi there, Im a student and have been diagnosed with a chronic illness called chronic idiopathic urticaria. Can be very difficult to deal with and has been present longer than 6 months at this stage. I live at home and am part of the drugs payment scheme already. I have tried seeking information with regards to medical cards but nobody answers the phone. I just sent an email enquiring about the illness benefit as i am really struggling to finance all these medications which im being prescribed. I am yet to find on that is totally effective but i just spent 98 euro on pills today which i dont have. Any advice would be greatly appreciated or feedback of any kind.

apply for a medical card anyway.

get a letter form the doctor detailing the possible length of the illness.

as you're living at home, you will have to give the details of your family living there too.

apply asap as it took us 6 months to get an answer.

in the mean time the drug payments scheme is the only scheme i think you are elidgable for.

The application form for the GP/Medical card is very informative and you should complete it, with assistance of your family as their details and documentation will also be required.

Even if the household income puts you over the limits, there is a possibility, outlined below, that your medication costs etc., will make a difference.

    E. If your income is above the income guidelines, you may still be granted a Medical Card or
GP Visit Card if you have exceptional circumstances that cause you undue
    financial hardship.
Please provide details and evidence of any other issues which you wish to have considered.
    Examples would include:
    • Health Expenses including
    professional fees
    • Prescribed Medicines or Appliances
    • Hospital Charges
    • Travel, Accommodation or
    Childcare costs related to
    attending clinics or hospitals
    • Loans or other money
    management issues
