how long does a dna sample last

i took a sample of my stock bull and sent it away to wetherbys last october and it seems to have been misplaced now the stock bull is burgers and i cant register his calves without doing six or more tests at my expense. i was thinking of taking hair samples off all bulls from now on and keeping them as back ups…
