"Go Safe" Camera at N4 Liffey Valley

Almost twice a week there has been a "Go Safe" van on the N4 at liffey valley - It seems to target Fridays as it is the one day of the week where the traffic actually moves at this junction.

I am not aware of anyone being killed on this road as per the advertisement on television, and it appears to target an incomprehensible 80 km zone.

I always do 80km, but I admit, I have to drive in the left most lane and engage the cruise control to maintain the speed for me and I still feel like I am impeeding the normal traffic flow...

In fairness to the new van's, I have actually seen them in some decent spots for stupid speeding as well as the usual cash cows. I never saw a gardai speed check anywhere that warranted it.

Is it on the towards Dublin side? I think it's 60 because traffic leaving Liffey valley and going south on the m50 has to cross three lanes in about 200 metres.

Same goes for traffic leaving the m50 from blanch and heading into Liffey valley.

the GUFF about them only parking in place where its a "blackspot" is total bollox.

Interesting that that's in an 80 zone, just after it changes from 60. You would expect to see the van at the other end where 80 goes down to 60.

I do remember seeing a Garda van parked at that spot almost permanently up until three years ago or so. Then a "mobile advertisement" van appeared almost in the same place and has been parked there ever since. To the unwary, it can look like a camera-van.

I've seen vans there often, but as far as I am aware they are the official Garda vans rather than the privately operated Go-Safe vans.

Personally I dont care where they park but did they not make a big song and dance when they first arrived about putting the "safety cameras" on accident black spots where there have been a lot of accidents or fatalities? I presume that is where people are getting this from.

I have no problem with these vans, however I would have respected them a lot more if they had called a spade a spade and just came out and said that they are speed cameras which are there to stop people speeding, rather than this nonsense of calling them safety cameras and trying to sugarcoat it.

I've seen them parked after the liffey valley exit heading out of town. Just where that little oddly out of place house is. Don't think it is a go safe enforcement zone as it's only unmarked vans I've seen.

I've seen a motorbike here with a hair dryer parked behind this bus stop. Luckily I was cycling at the time, but I still had to a double take to see him. Very hard to do under 80 there. The bike had passed me twice by the time I got into town, so it's a great spot for them.

    Hi,

It was a unmarked Garda Van , it's there possibly once or twice a week. Its a stupid place to have one because it's impossible to be speeding there because the traffic is such that you are never doing more than 50-60.

He was there at 07:45 this morning for sure ( I saw it and mentally laughed because of where it was )

The silly thing is , if they really wanted to help safety on that stretch of road then they should have unmarked mobile patrols , the amount of silly lane changes etc there is unreal.

The only Garda cars you ever see are either on their way or coming out of the Petrol Stn next to the Foxhunter where you often see 2-3 cars parked up ( I assume they get their petrol there )

The limit is 80 where the van is parked.
It drops to 60 about 300m further in towards the M50 junction.
The van was completely unmarked though. I thought they had some sort of markings on them, even if they were the private ones?

They dont always have markings. Sometimes there is only a Garda sign on the front of the van and nothing else.

In fairness at the place in question you have slow moving cars coming up the hill out of Liffey valley, some o which will need to cross three lanes to get to the m50 south so speeding in that spot has the potential to cause a very serious accident.

Actually where he was this morning and where he usually sits he can't catch that

    He was here

    http://maps.google.ie/?ll=53.355469,-6.399965&spn=0.010668,0.01929&t=m&z=16&layer=c&cbll=53.356692,-6.40162&panoid=6vejkn31Kn7o0ipT_DC22g&cbp=12,327.01,,0,0

It's not very well photographed here , they were re-doing the road at the time.

I saw him at 7:45 , the traffic was such you can't do more than about 50-60 kph .. and in fact when ever he is there it causes a bunching with the usual risk of rear-ending .

It's just about the worst place to have a speeding camera . It is a dangerous stretch of road for sure because of lane changes etc , but the only way to counter that would be mobile patrols.

I see it only a matter of time before someone is killed trying to cross lanes from liffey valley to get to the m50 southbound lane, it is a serious design flaw and the architects, designers and construction company should be held accountable - not the motorist.

Why they didn't they keep these junctions similar to the red cow, I'll never know.

I have been traveling that stretch for years and I've never seen a camera van there before. I'm about to pull out of liffey valley now and have to cross those 3 lanes to go southbound and I'm going to watch out.

I've travelled that route every weekday morning for over 3 years and there certainly isn't 'always' a van there, but I have seen them at this location (on both sides of the road) in the mornings more than once - they generally seem to target the area for a few weeks and then move on.

He is there often enough. This morning and about 4 weeks ago.

Usually a garda and not a go safe van though.

I just got a speeding fine in the post yesterday for that spot, was heading for the airport from Galway. Haven't been up to Dublin in about a year. Was done for 92 in the 80, that's 57 in a 50 old money. Was done by a garda, I can't recall any signage for the drop to 80 but I guess it must be there. I've been to Dublin 4 times in the last 2years and have 2 speeding fines as a result. the other one I was doing 136 in the 120.... 4 penalty points on that f**kin road.....:mad::mad:

The speed drops from 120 to 80 just before the Spawell hotel about 8Km before the liffey valley, and the van is generally parked on the liffey valley overpass, so you were about 100m away from a 60km zone.

You cant blame signage on that one. The highest speed limit on any road in the country is 120.

A camera is regularly there or just beside woodies at the lucan/ballyowen exit of the N4.

Its just proof that the cameras have nothing to do with road safety and are just there to make money. If speed cameras were actually put in dangerous places I might say fair play, but since they just seem to end up on roads that warrant a higher limit I find it hard to disagree with the people who do things like this http://www.rte.ie/news/2011/0314/arklow.html

I live in the area and don't see a problem with the 80kmh limit. The drop to 60 on the inbound side is a bit sneaky but I can see the reasoning. I can certainly see the need for enforcement on both sides near the M50 junctions though. They are very badly designed but aren't likely to be changed again in my lifetime. As has been said, when you have traffic coming from Liffey Valley trying to get to the M50 southbound across three lanes, and people like one of the previous posters who fail to notice a 40kmh drop in the speed limit four miles back, there is the potential for a very serious accident.

Outbound from the M50 junction I think the bus lane should be scrapped until after the Liffey Valley exit. Another spot with the potential for carnage with traffic from three different roads jostling for position and the regular addition of morons coming off the M50 north who will either stop at the end of the merging lane rather than use the bus lane for a few metres to merge, or swerve out of it as if there was a wall at the start of the bus lane.

    Wow!
Torching a van with somebody working inside it is a reasonable response to not being allowed drive as fast as you think you should?

They have everything to do with safety.

I'll be the first person to say I think some speed limits are unreasonable. Some roads should be faster a lot should be slower.

But the speed limits applied to roads are done so based on some sort of evidence and empirical study.

All you have to base your "I hate speed cameras" on os your own feeling of persecution and your own belief in your amazing driving skills.

quick question: how long does it take to get the fine in the post from that van?

unfortunately i was doing over 80 km/h - about 90km/h in the fast lane, as i was going to join the m50 southbound.

i did not see a flash, but there is no way they missed me as i was over the limit.

im just wondering how long it takes to post, and how much is the fine again usually?

    3 weeks seems the norm.

However, 90km/h may not have truly been 90km/h, more like 85-86km/h in probability and you may not have triggered the flash at that speed.

And having a merging lane in the overtaking lane is just silly imo.

You won't, it's an infra-red flash. Only the Garda vans use visible light.

arent the garda vans white and the go safe grey?

it was a white van, with no stickers on it. is that a go safe van?
