Hi ive just opened up an account to get advise solely on a problem which is wrecking my head. I'm looking for advice on a scenario regarding an inter county transfer. I've been with my club since i was 14, 33 now and havent played for my club or paid membership for 2 yrs. I was thinking of joining a club in a neighboring county. The reason for the move is the chance of playing at a higher level than that if I went back to my club. It would be also something different. I am still living in the area of my local club but working in the neighboring county. The town where I work is where the potential club is also.
Am I wasting my time applying as it will be rejected? The move has been on my mind since Christmas & I don't want to become a rag doll if it gets nasty. I really miss playing & I know posters will suggest to stay where I am but I'm just concerned whether the team would survive (players not turning up, lack of interest as its the 3rd team) when i could have given it one more go at a decent level before i hang up the boots
    What is the transfer process?
Can it be appealed & on what grounds?
    The likely outcome?
Any advice would be grately appreciated. I've checked the gaa website but I was wondering if anyone has more one on one knowledge & advise that can be offered
    Thanks

TBH I'd be more familiar with the transfer process in ladies football, but I've a decent enough knowledge of the rules of the mens one as well

Transfer process is immediately complicated by the fact that you are going over the cuonty boundaries. If you were not crossing county borders, you should not have a problem with it. The fact that you have not played for 2 years can mean that you are essentially a free agent under some county byelaws, and depending on your county, the transfer could be granted on this rule: "A County shall also have the option, within County Bye-Law, to allow a player to play with a Club in the area in which he works."

Biggest problem is the fact you are going over county boundaries - inter county transfers are bound by the following rule "A player who wishes to play for a Club in another County must apply for a transfer to the Provincial or Central Council, as appropriate. Such application shall not be granted unless the player is in permanent residence in the
new County, or is declaring for his Home Club under Rule 6.5

To apply, you'd have to get a transfer form, fill it out and send it to your provincial council. I think the form is online on the GAA website somewhere. As to the chance of success, it depends on what two counties you are talking about - problem with that is that the transfer has to go before provincial before going to the county boards. With the ladies it would go from one county board to the other, before going to provincial. Because I don't know the county you are from, it might be a good idea to ring your county secretary and see, or contact the club secretary of the club you are joining.

Honestly cannot say the outcome, as I don't know the ins and outs of the byelaws within the counties. If it wasn't intercounty and depending on the county byelaws, I'd reckon you would have a pretty good chance of transferring, based on the fact that you are 2 years out of the game. Its more complicated because of it going over county borders. Best thing you can do is fill out the form, and send it off to the provincial council as soon as possible, depending on their own byelaws, there might be a certain time that they deal with transfers, and nothing after that.

Some of the county bye laws are actually published on their own county weksbites, might be worth a look. Might be worth having a look at both counties websites to see if there is a byelaw about staying out of games for a certain length of time and transferring anywhere, or being allowed play in a place where you work

The rules governing transfer law are here - chapter 6 on page 59

Sorry to pick up on just one point in your post but if the main reason for moving to the other club is to play at a higher level then why don't you play for the second team within your current club?
