Roger Walkowiak has been mentioned here before, but here's a recent interview with him. http://www.bicycling.com/news/featured-stories/lamentation

Notwithstanding the immense esteem with which the French hold the Tour de France and the utter reverence for the elite that tend to win, it is difficult to read about and understand the apparent derision that faced Walkowiak after his win in '56 - all because he was not one of the elite, it seems.

He doesn't appear to have really benefitted from his win - except in the eyes of fellow cyclists perhaps - and has had a very ordinary life since retiring a few years afterwards.

An interesting man, who made his own way in life.
