i came accross this website on the 2012 west of ireland thread here

    seems a novel idea --

idea being that if someone is looking for a game they could link up with a a member and get members rates etc -- there will an app to locate members within a close distance etc

any views? -- Joe Lyons (ex international) is behind it

See that mentioned in the Connacht tribune last week.

    Nice idea.

The owner of the website spammed this board with a post about it a while back, looks like the post is gone now.
The response wasn't too favourable from what I remember.

And rightly so in my opinion. Visitor with a member rates are there to help the member as much as the visitor. A way of showing off your course to close friends and family.

For me the most important thing about the visitor rates is you get to play with your visitor and 'show them round'. With the above site you don't who is playing on your name!

This just looks like a way of getting cheaper green fees from already struggling golf clubs. I'll certainly be avoiding anything to do with it.

i guess in many cases clubs might be happy with more traffic even at member rates ?

IN the USA most private clubs dont allow anyone play unless with a member (or with a letter of introduction) -- if it took off there it would be big for us mere mortals who can only dream of playing say the Olympic CLub in San Fran

Those sorts of arguments can be used to cover most things in life. Based on the above logic I should be driving a petrol car rather than diesel since I am contributing less to the Revenue and therefore a cause of taxes being so high? Then again my car is efficient so has lower co2 than the norm so I am doing my bit for the environment.

If it brings more people into the sport then surely that is a good thing. I would say that it would be unlikely that people using that website would turn up and pay the rack price of green fees in anycase and they could be lost to the sport altogether if it weren't for a discount on offer.

I think it might work as a social thing, get to know a few lads in adjacent courses and play with them at reduced rates. As a financial thing I'm not too sure, Open Singles are hard to beat for value and are very reliable as usually same pace same day every week during the season.
