I usually don't get to shoot many rallies these days (although it's something I'm looking to change this season) so when I do, it's a task I relish. Last weekend's Circuit was proper challenge and a great event to get warmed up for the rest of the season. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the images below and I've included a link to more if you would like to view them.

    Hello stranger!

Great images. One criticism is that a few of the later shots above show the back of the car, which on some cases is less interesting, #7 for example. But in general you've got exciting and interesting angles.

    I really like this one:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/31028264@N00/6921996524
    It made my head spin.

    This one is also excellent:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/31028264@N00/7068075303
as it hides almost everything about the shot behind the headlamps to great effect.

It's difficult to get a sense of speed in the high shutter speed shots without motion blur, I guess Irish roads could do with being a bit worse so there could be some dirt thrown up.

Some really great shots right there. I'm just going through you're flickr at the moment looking at various cars and such but I'm curious about where you shoot from when its for rally driving like that?. Do you just go behind some trees and zoom right in or are there barriers people shoot from?. In shot 6 it looks like the car flew right past you. :)

There's definitely a fine line in achieving that pin sharp with lots of background separation and smooth bokeh look and trying to introduce some movement into the image at the same time. So many variables too including speed, surface and angle of attack.

It did, maybe eight to twelve inches away. Picking your spot is the hardest part of rallying but having the magic tabard of accreditation helps quite a bit. I usually like to shoot from far back (for obvious self preservation reasons) but some times it's necessary to get right up close with the action.

I like them a lot and good to see that you're not going for the standard rally shots.
I've just added your site to my RSS feed

    Hello,
My dad used to take me to the Circuit or Ireland as a young fella. Now my young fella wants me to take him to a rally. Happy to comply, but whats upcoming that is impressive and reasonably close to Dublin? I don't see any mention of a Circuit of Ireland 2018, so I'm a bit out of the loop.
    Recommendations?

Check http://www.motorsportireland.com/ for fixtures. Lots of the early March events were cancelled due to weather so they should be cramming events in towards the end of the month.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

The CoI is not running in 2018 and anyway in the past few years, it's all been based in the North. The UAC is running the Easter Stages instead. For close to Dublin, it's the ALMC rally but that's not running this year.

Wow, a bit of a blast from the past this one. It's been a while :)

If he's showing interest in cars, maybe a Cars & Coffee event might be a great introduction for him to get up close and personal with a variety of cars? The next on is on April 1st near Bray - http://www.backroads.ie/forums/showthread.php?24967-CANCELLED-Backroads-Cars-amp-Coffee-Sunday-March-4th-2018-CANCELLED

If he wants more after that, there's always lots of great events held at Mondello Park (Auto Heroes, IDC etc.) and of course rally season is kicking off now, too. All with plenty of photography opportunities, too.
