Unexpected shut-off, harddrive problem?

Been having a few unexpected shut-offs lately and I'm wondering if it could be down to the harddrive. Basically the battery is screwed, get about 30 seconds with the screen on and the charger and charger port are both very unreliable. Because of those reasons there's been a fair amount of power shortages causing the laptop to go off quickly over the last few months. The laptop is also very prone to overheating even when there's not much demand on the processor or RAM. In the last couple of weeks though there's been a couple of shut-offs per day when any even slightly demanding task is being done. It seems similar to the over-heating shut-offs in that it's instant and there's no blue screen or whatever but it's not down to heat. I'm wondering if it could be an indication of harddrive failure bearing in mind the massive amount of instant shut-offs it's been through.

Has your fan ever been cleaned out?

Sometimes your laptop's base doesn't even have to be hot to the touch before it cuts out because of fluff / whatever clogging the fan's airflow.
