Installing newer firmware on old jailbroken iPhones

I have an old iPhone 3G, which I'm gonna pass on to my girlf once I get the home button fixed.

Unfortunately (aside from my niggling security concerns), the main reason I'd want us both to have an iPhone - iMessage - isn't available on the 3G. Is there any way to trick Apple into thinking a jailbroken 3G is a later model phone? If not, are there any decent 3G-compatible free messaging systems?

Can you not put ios5 on a 3G?
Edit: a quick google reveals you can't.

Have you tried What's App for messaging?

    Whatsapp is a great app.
    Recommend it thoroughly.
