hi, i have a morris minor with 4" rims and need to get new tyres, any one know is the correct size tyre to use. Currently it has 165/r14's fitted but from looking on the web 145/r14 or 155/r14 seem to be recomended .

    I'd say fit tyres to replace the original 5.20 / 5.60 x 14 - there might be 145 / 155 x 14's off a new Polo / fiesta that would do - 165s are a bit 'chunky' for the MM

165/14 are probably on the wide side for a 4" Minor rim. The 165/14s were probably fitted on a "whatever was available at the time" basis. 5.20 x 14 crossplies were probably original.

Nearest sizes in radial would be:

135/80 14 a long obsolete size only just available again - Vredestein Sprint Classic. I've not seen them advertised, but apparently 500 of them went to the UK from NL.

145/80 14 another now oddball size Camac BN313 became unavailable and have now reappeared again. Bridgestone B381 Ecopia are around, but relatively expensive, they were originally re-introduced for a couple of VAG economy models that had low rolling resistance skinny tyres on - Audi A2 / Lupo 3L

    155/80 14 a choice of Toyo 310 / Nankang CX668

    Compare:
    Vintage Tyre Supplies http://www.vintagetyres.com
    Longstone Tyres http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/
    Bull Motif http://www.morrisminorspares.net/

If anyone offers any of the above sizes in another brand, check the date code on them, they may be as old as the hills.

I've dealt with all three of the above without issue. Longstone last year for some Michelins. Bull Motif for some Bridgestones back in 2008 and Vintage Tyre Supplies in 1991 for some Dunlops.

Steering should be nice and light on 145s.
