Not necessarily... could be just the filesystem being corrupt.

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install

OK, if you want to test the drive, get the Ultimate Bood CD (worry not, it's free), boot the laptop from UBCD (F12 at the Dell Logo to select the boot device) navigate to Hard Disk Diagnosis, find ViVARD and select Surface Test.

    Don't bother with Repair.

Hard disks don't react well to being trampled on :o but yeah sounds like either the drive is broken or worse the impact of the trampling dislodged the SATA connector (Although it doesn't seem like connector is the problem fortunately!)

Unmountable Boot Volume can be fixed easily enough sometimes (If XP is the operating system you have)

Pop in a Windows XP disc, restart the laptop, press F12 at the Dell logo, choose CD/DVD drive, and press any key when prompted to boot to the CD.

Let it load up and press R to open recovery console, it might ask you to choose your operating system (by selecting 1 or whatever) and enter in your Administrator password - the password you probably use to log into your account when you boot up.

From there type FIXBOOT and type "Y" when asked.

You could restart the machine at this point to see if it worked but it doesn't hurt to then type chkdsk /r afterwards to do a check.
