Successor to the original Desire?

    Hi folks,
Some of you may have seen threads where I've been having issues with an SMS bug. As well as this, there's also a few other fidly bugs that yes, may be custom ROM related, but don't seem to be getting ironed out any time soon as I think the Desire is almost obsolete in the modding world.

The desire as a phone itself is perfect for me and if I'm upgrading, I'd like one as similar as possible. When I say this, I mean plenty of physical buttons, I love the optical track pad, the dedicated back, menu and search buttons and of course the volume buttons on the side etc. I wouldn't like a screen only device.

Also the size, shape, weight, the fact there are a lot of accessories for it (silicone case being important one as I tend to knock phones around quite a bit). Everything hardware wise is absolutely fine for me, I don't need a faster more powerful phone as I really only use it for basic things and the desire handles all this perfectly. If it wasn't for bugs, I'd be happy to keep it for another few years probably.

Anyway, I'm due an upgrade and I could either get an iPhone and sell it on for a decent amount, or if there is a successor to the desire, I might consider this instead. I could always get an iPhone, sell and then get a 2nd hand successor if it would give me a good chunk in the difference.

So besides all the hardware similarities I want, I also want the phone to as bug free as possible, rooted with a custom ROM, whatever it may take, I'm just getting tired of the bugs popping up. I just want a phone I can rely on but don't really want to compromise anything from the desire (even the flashlight torch!) :)

    Any feedback would be appreciated!

So, let me get this straight...
    • you want an upgrade to the desire
    • but you don't want any physical changes from the desire
    • but you want an up to date upgrade
    • but you want it to be exactly like the desire

Is this correct? The Desire S is the upgrade to the Desire. Android phones no longer come with hardware buttons, so give up on that...

The One S is or One X are currently occupying the space that the Desire once held... If you are not fussy - as you say - just get the Desire S, it is due an update to the latest OS, but already runs a very stable version.

Sounds to me like you just need a working rom

The Desire S is end of life too. Its actually the HTC One V which is the "new Desire".

In actual fact, its basically the Desire S with Sense 4 and ICS.

HTC One V vs. HTC Desire S

BTW, I've got the Desire and not looking to upgrade any time soon. I'm using MildWild's CM based ROM and its lightning fast and all txts get sent to their correct recipient! ;)

Thanks for the replies everyone. Yep, basically looking for as similar a model as possible to the desire in terms of physical and screen size and something as good as the optical track pad for editing a typo etc.

Really don't think a new ROM will solve the issue I have. Also have another issue where it's saying the phone is low on space but I partitioned the phone before using an app so never thought that would come up :(

Have tried I think 3 different ROMS, all with the same text issue so I think it may be desire related and not just ROM related.

So you reckon the hardware buttons are to be no more in future models?

To be honest... i'd bite the bullet and forego hardware buttons. They slowly seem to be disappearing from phones and don't look as if they're coming back.

The size and style is a lot different but the only real successor I can see to the Desire nowadays is the HTC One S or X. I bought an X two days ago and although the extra screen size takes a bit of getting used to, once you've gotten a hang of it the Desire almost feels like a toy. I haven't seen the One S yet but i'd imagine it's much the same.

Thanks PAMG. The size of the desire is perfect for me and given my job, doing furniture removals, running upstairs, resting stuff on my knees to get a better grip etc, I don't think a bigger phone would suit. Maybe I'll just stick with the Desire a bit longer. Maybe a new Rom may fix the issue and if it did, I'd be happy to stay with the Desire for the foreseeable future!

Honestly, even thought the Desire S is reaching its end of life, it may be just the right phone for you...

I have no intention of giving mine up any time soon and i have loads of space for apps and data... + you can save apps to memory card. I'd say you'd get a good deal on one before they are obsolete...

What has the S got over the original, no optical track pad I notice :(

Maybe I'd just be best off trying yet ANOTHER rom and hope the bug doesn't persist. Is ICS available on the original desire or is it not capable of running it?

My missus has the Desire S. Its slightly ever so slightly faster on paper, but the custom ROM I have, combined with ChainFire 3D and RAM manager, is actually faster in every day use.

The screen is slightly better on the Desire S as well. Honestly, I wouldnt bother upgrading to it. The only advantage will be the extra space for apps. There's more ROMs for the original Desire and the trackball is something I love, so I couldnt use the Desire S.

Unfortunately, you're gonna have to find a way to fix that SMS issue, coz there's no real 3.7 inch proper upgrade out there. Unless of course, you wanna jump up to 4.3inches.

Thanks again folks. PAMG, I may have to avail of your services again :P

Don't htink the S is something I'd bother upgrading to alright, I'd rather keep the trackball and upgrade and sell on the likes of an iphone.

Definitely don't want to go 4.3 anyway :)

There was a suggestion to fix the SMS bug in another thread whihc I've yet to try, a little scared, but I might have to give it a go if I'm staying with the Desire!

So I tried wiping my SMS Database to try fix the bug I've had but it didn't work, still the same bug crops up again.

I think I might try a new ROM. Maybe the MildWild one The B Man has suggested above if it's bug free?

PAMG, would you be free for another session and can you suggest any other possible ROMS or would you reckon the MildWild one is a good choice?

If you like sense, I'm using runny rom on my original desire. Tis Gingerbread with sense 3.5. No issues with sms as far as I'm aware of.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion, have gingerbread on it at the moment so would like to try ICS or even Honeycomb to see if either fix the problem :)

    Honeycomb is for tablets only.
Sadly ICS isnt supported on the Desire.
That doesnt mean there wont be a ROM for it, but there arent any fully working ones yet. A lot of the ICS roms are just gingerbread with ICS themes/skins. Check out andrdcndy for a list of whats out there. There is a beta ICS which is ok but still a little unstable. BCM was ok from messing around with it but I wouldnt have massive faith in either yet.

There won't be any Android phones with hardware buttons because that is the way Android is heading beginning with ICS.

cormie - i'm in exactly the same position - got the original desire - and planning it successor.

i'm using mildwild 3.8 at the moment - having used a whole range of roms, and its wonderful.
if you're going from the htc sense gingerbread, it'll feel like a new phone

Cool, well I think I'll try mildwild and if that doesn't work, I may just have to put up with the bug for life :P
