How much can you improve?

Hi im 19 and I initially started running to lose weight, but like many found it addictive and grew to love it! My running times are 21'30 for 5k, 34'57 for 8k and I reckon I'd be fit for a sub 45 10k.
With the proper training how much can I improve these times, is it possible for me to ever compete in any of these distances. I know I'd have to shave a lot of minutes off to compete.
Am I too late to running, or have any of ye started at similar levels to myself?
Would love to hear stories of ye're own improvement!

No one simple answer but is heavily dependant on
    1) how much do you do now ?
    2) how much are you willing to commit to?

If you are willing to push 2, train smart, can stay injury free and are willing to hurt in races than yes you can compete.

Are there any clubs or seasoned runners in your locale?

Plenty of runners have come to the sport much later than you and done very well. Don't set any limits - just aim to improve continuously and see where your end up.

If you want specific training advice set a goal and ask for some advice and/or join a club. As a basic principle though aim to gradually increase the length and the frequency of your runs with faster running 1-2 times per week.

    Don't forget to enjoy it!

I went to my first training with the local club this evening, very enjoyable :) I'm currently only running 2-3 times a week, but I get a good long cycle in once a week, bit of 5 a side, and gym 3-4 times a week.
I would be willing to focus more time on running though as I enjoy it the most.

As for goals, my current goals are firstly a sub 20 5k, then in time, a sub 40 10k would be next.
