Irish citizen travelling to Burma - think I need to get a visa in advance but not sure if I can do it in Ireland or need to do it via the UK. Anyone done this before?

Planning to visit this year also, great to see the (tentative) winds of change in the country. Although travel there has Aung Suu Kyi's approval, she as well as human rights groups advise being careful how you spend your money to minimize it getting into government hands.

I'm planning to get the visa in Bangkok (not in Europe presently), which is supposed to be straight forward, and then travel in overland. According to some internet accounts you can get a visa on arrival at Yangon and Mandalay airports, but I won't be chancing that.

Really looking forward to seeing Bagan, remember seeing pictures of it as a child and thinking it looked like an ancient alien colony or something.
What time of year will you be going?

EDIT: After checking, It's no longer possible to get a visa on arrival. I guess the Myanmar embassy in London is your best bet, that or the Bangkok route.

Also planning on going to Burma in Jan 13. Does anyone know how easy it is to get a visa in London. Will I have to go over in person to apply or can I post passport? Will probably fly through Dubai and Bangkok but don't want to depend on getting the visa in Bangkok.

Hi Meathlass, have you got everything booked for your trip? I'm thinking of doing SE Asia and India late next year, thinking of flying into Yangon from Bangkok and out from Mandalay back to Bangkok. Bangkok seems to be only way in and out really and only costs 100 euro or so for a return. Have you booked accomodation or anything like that? I've heard there's no ATMs in the country, which sounds a bit daunting!
