Computer Query

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop which is probably around six years old. I was away for almost a year and it wasn't used. I now find it extremely slow and I cannot change my playlist on my ipod. It's a generation 2 ipod shuffle. I don't know if I'm just dealing with a lost cause at this point as both items are years old or if there is something I can do. I love my computer but one would need the patience of Job to use it for anything. If it is a lost cause, can anyone recommend a new computer. I don't want to spend a fortune as I also have an Asus TF101 but I'm just not that keen on it.

iTunes does that to Windows computers, especially older ones... ;)

And don't put iTunes on it, there are alternatives to manage your iPod entirely without it. Floola, for example is a portable program you run from your iPod on ANY computer and copy songs onto the iPod.

The Asus should be plug and play, just drag & drop files over. I had an ipod and it was a pain in the backside using it (not to mention the fact I have a decent spec machine and it still ran dog slow).
If you must use the ipod Sharepod lets you add music to it, but I found non itunes apps to be not very relyable back then. Having said that Itunes did decide to restore my ipod randomly every now and again, or it screwed it up (repeating the alphabet and adding songs several times :P ):rolleyes:

Thanks Nick! Technology is driving me batty (or battier!) these days. Never had problems until recently. What happened to simple and straightforward?!

I do have another question. What do you mean by the Asus should be plug and play? I'm beginning to understand how my mother feels!

Plug the tablet in, and in android activate "Storage mode". Then simply copy your music from your "C:" drive lets say directly onto the tablet, there should be a "Music" folder on the tablet drive for them. Its very simple, a little outdated but the same principle explained well here :)

The problem is that people buy the latest and greatest gadgets, each one to ship with some piece of management software or other, designed for modern hardware. Then they expect it to run on their old clunkers? Can't blame the manufacturers for that.

Case in point, Apple custommers have to install a bunch of media players on their computers, iTunes, QuickTime. Software designed for Mac OS X and horribly ported on the Windows platform (revenge is sweet), and as if this isn't bad enough, people end up with Apple's Bonjour networking protocol, Apple's software updater, Apple's web browser, Apple's device manager, etc. All this cr*pware is being loaded at the system startup, using precious resources while waiting for the rare occasion when the Apple gadget is actually connected to the PC.

Thanks Nick. Now having trouble syncing my computer with Asus but I'm sure it'll work fine once I sort that out!

Torqay, though I don't have a phenomal grasp of computers, I have never had problems with my ipod or Dell before that I couldn't sort out. It only seems to be since my computer went unused for so long.

The Asus on the other hand I think is a curse. Early yesterday it played tv links and now I can't get it to play tv links or rte player. It upgraded itself and whatever worked before doesn't work now. Any ideas?

I read on a website to go into settings and to change user agent to desktop. The problem is when it updated itself my whole settings has also changed and there is no user agent that I can find!

It is now a glorified book, photo storage and game player because I can't use it for anything else!

Every new edition of iTunes becomes more and more bloated, I mean over 70+megs for a bloody media player download :( . It could just be a new update to itunes, started the issue, wouldn't suprise me in the slightest tbh. Torqay makes an excellent point:

Ironically enough iTunes was the only software that used to cause a BSOD on Vista for me if I inserted a particular USB key with iTunes open, dreadful programming
