Fake Golf Pride Grips

well, after a lot of suspicion and research ive come to the conclusion my golf new decade multicompounds are fake.

how did i come to the conclusioon? well after a few weeks of playing with them i noticed that every club felt different. the feel off the ball strike was differnet than i was used to, just didn't feel right at all.

so this evening i took the clubs out of the bag, and guess what, all the grips were different lengths. This, was major clue number one and got me going.

so after a bit of googling this is what i found:
    COMPARISON-1.jpg

    COMPARISON-2.jpg

    COMPARISON-3.jpg

    COMPARISON-4.jpg

    COMPARISON-5.jpg

    Capture1.png

    Capture3.png

so needless to say, im not a happy bunny. I knew my ball striking hasn't been good since changing the grips, but put it down to them being a little thinner, also my left wrist has been getting sore the last couple of weeks and i couldn't figure out why. Thought i was loosing my mind!!!

the only bad thing, bought the grips off some fella off facebook so am sure i've no recourse. Guess ill have to go fork out a chunk of change to have my clubs regripped!

    Thanks for the warning matt.
There was someone selling dodgy ones on adverts a while back - someone kept following him and spoiling his ads, I think the seller eventually gave up.

probably the same guy i bought them off!!

    You avin a laff ?

'Ball striking hasnt been as good...feel of the ball strike just didnt feel right at all' because the grips are fakes.

    Good one.

Think of sending back the long distance underpants I bought myself on eBay - only added about 5 yards to my drives rather than the promised 10. I was had. Only genuine Mizuno ones give you extra distance.

How much did u pay for them?

There are loads of people selling them on eBay/Facebook/adverts/donedeal etc. It is near impossible to get the real ones for less than 7 euro when buying them in bulk (in the thousands) so if anyone sees them for that or lower beware.
I've seen people buying 9 grips for 30 or 40 euro online and I've no idea how people can think they are legit

grips can make a significant difference to your game, especially the thickness of them (and what they're made of) which can contribute to the feel of the ball strike by reducing vibration and can change direction by promoting a more wristier action which can make you hook the ball.

go look it up chief and take your underpants elswhere

Its easy to stretch grips to different lengths when you fit them. And stretching them a little also varies thickness. Maybe just bad fitting ? Still reckon you must have the most sensitive hands in world golf.

Sickner.... I went through all that (will I buy ebay wont I buy ebay grips) and in the end I played safe and the best deal I could get was with gamola golf. Paid 60ish euros for 13 golf pride tour velvets which are about half the price of new decades.

Anything less then 100 yo yos for them and ild be concerned...

Matt this is what you should do in my opinion, lesson learned on the tosser you bought the fakes from, move on. There will be a little bit of money spent initially but view it as an investment.
My suggestion, head to Gamola Golf: http://www.gamolagolf.co.uk/
Its a well used site amongst boards members with good reviews and a prompt service. Buy the kit that they have for sale that will help you to change your own grips and YouTube a demo of how to do your own grips, there are plenty even here:http://www.gamolagolf.co.uk/acatalog/DIY-Re-gripping-Guide.html.
The first few will be time consuming as you master how to put them on but after a few you will wonder why you ever gave a shop money to do the fitting for you. Gamola has a huge range of grips from all the leading manufactures and you will never look back, guaranteed. Try other grips, the Golf Pride BCT and VDR grips are lovley as are my favourite's the super expensive Gripmaster Kangaroo leather grips (A full set in these,I wish). You will change your grips more often and there is nothing that makes an club feel better than a new grip.
    Best of luck.

these grips should sit exactly the same on each club with no more than a few millimetres varience, not over an inch and a half

Wow - the fakes are very very close.

Must have a look at mine tonight. I bought off eBay from a well-ranked seller in the US that still worked out cheaper than Gamola and they feel great so I will be surprised if they turn up fake.

Ebay is absolutely chok-a-blok with fake Multi compounds :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,468 ✭✭✭matt-dublin

got mine redone last night for a ton.

they are very clost but when i started to look at them you could see they were fake, expecially my driver. After about 10 rounds the red part at the bottom of the grip looked like it had melted or the rubber dye was running into the black.

Checked mine and they all stack up - thankfully.

Golfbidder has a great section on counterfeit clubs as well - it's nearly impossible to tell the difference with some of them.

Yep,why not try the Sharpro Multicompound grips ?
    http://www.gamolagolf.co.uk/acatalog/Sharpro_Multicompound_Dual_Compound_Cord_Golf_Grips.html
They are meant to be as good if not better than the Golf Pride MCC and are a fraction of the price.

if theyre better why do no pros use them?

I bought a few Sharpro coloured full cord grips from Gamola at the same time I bought Golf Prides on eBay for my main set.

I wouldn't go with Sharpro again TBH as the grips I applied are definitely a lot less tacky and slipper than the Prides under similar usage conditions.

Pros generally use what they are paid to use .;)
A huge percentage of each manufacturers budget goes on sponsorships and marketing.

Fair enough ,the reviews I read mostly praised them.

The Sharpro 3CAT Rubber grips are very nice, prefer them to any Multi-compound on my woods.Excellent grips for the price.

If I'm being completely honest I think both GP and Shapro's Multi-compounds are manky. Really don't like the feeling.

The other Shapro grips I tried were good, but just good. They took a few weeks to break in to full tackiness and wore quickly enough. That's a bit of a downside but in fairness they are 1/3 of the cost of GolfPrides.

Very hard to play anything other than GP Tour Velvet's on irons, especially with the Irish weather.

GP Dual Durometer's would be my pick out of any grip, will be switching back next time around.

Grips are personal thing I suppose, but with gamola golf a few grips and some tape/solvent is relatively cheap, they are surprisingly easy to fit too.Best bet is just to try out a few different kinds.

I have a Golf Pride Multicompound on my driver and a Sharpro Multicompound on my hybrid and I don't notice a huge difference. The GP kept its tackiness longer but I don't think either grip is great to be honest. Both lost their tackiness a lot quicker than a standard "Tour velvet" type grip.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,690 ✭✭✭Whyner

Do people generally go for velvet on woods and cord on irons? If so, why?

I don't think I like cord at all, reckon I was convincing myself I did cause they're so popular, overruled!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,468 ✭✭✭matt-dublin

I've got the multi compound on all my clubs now, thats the whole point of them,

the top end of the grip is chord and the bottom is closer to velvet.

got my new ones on there now and they feel great at address, the chord on them is a lot softer and tackier than the old golf pride shord used to be.

Not up on my grips, never changed them before. I do like the idea of having the same grips on each club

Currently have the standard tm and ping grips on my woods/irons

Not sure what to go for, might try out a few up in my club tomorrow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,468 ✭✭✭matt-dublin

thats the only way to find out, if your local driving range is any good they might have a few demo clubs with different grips on them that you can have a pop with

Just spotted what seems like a genuine add for some GP Multi-compound's on adverts. Pretty cheap so though I would post the link in case anyone feels inclined after the discussion about them.

    http://www.adverts.ie/1541431

Be sure to check they are genuine though.

May well be genuine, but the fact that the same seller has a bunch more grips for sale would make me cautious. . .http://www.adverts.ie/search/user-562078/status_active/type_all

Definitely worth checking the details - guy says that GolfSmith sent him the wrong size grips, yet he was still having to pay to return them even though it was their mistake. Doesn't stack up to me.
