    Hi guys,

I am looking to upgrade from Windows Vista Ultimate to windows 7 and just wanted to ask if there is much difference between the home, professional and Ultimate editions?

I would need the 64bit version as I am using 8GB of RAM. The PC is mostly used for high end gaming and watching HD video.

Also, windows 7 seems rather expensive still. The software for students website has it pretty cheap. Is it possible to get a friend who is a student to buy it for me?

Home Premium is all you need for gaming.

Unlesss you want to build a new machine with more than 16 GB RAM (that's where Home Premium is capped). ;)

Check out the vista tweaks in the sticky if you are after performance

Mac users can get an upgrade OSX for €30

Many versions of Linux/BSD are free

No ones forcing you to upgrade, but if you do then you have accepted the End User License Agreement

you could also install the Windows 8 consumer preview if you want to hold off on buying an upgrade as of yet. You might even find you prefer 8 and go with that when it launches. Presumably they will do another Family Pack when that hits, which was a sick deal that I always regretted not jumping on :(
