Continue to pay your rent on time, have a very good friend or family member, someone you can trust, either live there or drop in regularly and fend off nosy neighbours. Keep your mouth shut about your plans until you know that your relocation is working.

The norm is that you cannot be away from your Council house for more than 6 weeks in any one year and still maintain your tenancy.

I was thinking of going away for a few months and had someone to check in a few times a week and the rent is paid by DD.

As for telling them I'm not sure how long you can leave the place without loosing it and I'd be really interested to find out but I'd assume they would not be very happy about you going and would prefer if the place had shutters while unoccupied as if something happens they foot the bill and it would be messy, are you working abroad? don't you have to tell them any change in your income?
