I currently have a 04 toyota avensis 1.6 petrol and the protective coat of the paint work seems to be peeling off..I have seen the same thing happen on similar avensis. Just wondering why this is happening and if toyota will do anything about it ?

Usually from a poor repair job. The 'protective coat' is lacquer, and will power wash off if the job hasn't been prepared properly.

well I have seen this on two different avensis...they were hardly crashed too ?..anyone have any cheap methods of repairing this kind of damage

Not necessarily crashed, but maybe had their bumpers scuffed. You can be sure that a lot of Avensis would have had bumper repairs, like most cars for sale. No quick fix only a respray, and the price will vary depending on where you take it. If you can, post photos here and I'll be happy to advise.

Definitely a repair so. What usually happens is that the base coat is put on wet, and before it gets a chance to dry, another base coat layer is put on. That dries, but the one underneath is still wet. Then lacquer goes on top, that dries too, and you have two layers of paint which are dry, but only a small amount of grip holding it onto the panel. Couple of powerwashes later, and the lack of grip will allow the paint to flake off as per the photo.

so that means a whole respray ?? theres spots all over the car

Without seeing the car in person, it's hard to say. Might be no harm to bring it to your local bodyshop and ask them for a quote for repair. Shouldn't cost you anything, and they'll tell you what caused it.

true enough...will do that tomorrow...cheers for the help !!

This happened to my parents Carina years ago. My Dad had it resprayed (we eventually realised poorly) and in a few years the lacquer started coming off from every panel on the car, so my guess is maybe the same has happened to yours.

Would this be caused by droplets of water from an underground carpark?

Not causing it on my car. I live in the country and have never used under ground car parking
